I need a place that can offer financial aid, so preferably private schools.

Majoring in economics.

I've done some filtering out, and right now, I'm thinking about Rice and Penn SAS. Any others? Cornell CAS too hard to get into? Feedback is much appreciated.

SMU, Swathmore, NYU, Columbia, Northeastern, Northwestern. Take your pick of LACs more or less. Best of luck to you. BTW that 4.0 at UT McCombs is not an easy task so you should be able to pick where you want to go.

Such an odd assortment of schools. Northeastern and Columbia don’t even belong in the same sentence.

I would put Northeastern in the same league as Columbia. From Wikipedia though independently verifiable.
1st for “Best Internships/Career Services” (Princeton Review) (2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011)
2nd on the list of “Up-and-coming National Universities” US News and World Report (2010 and 2011) [33]
4th by the Boston Business Journal in terms of the number of graduates who are current CEOs of Massachusetts Companies behind Harvard, MIT, and Boston College (Boston Business Journal Book of Lists 2010)
4th as one of “America’s Most Entrepreneurial Campuses” (Forbes Magazine) [34]
Northeastern is also listed among 25 “Cutting-Edge Schools” in the 2008 edition of “You Are Here,” a college guide by Kaplan Publishing.
12th in Criminology (graduate) US News (2009)
12th on the list of “Top Entrepreneurial Programs” by the Princeton Review (2011)
13th on the list of “Best Graduate Schools 2009” for Computer Science, Programming Languages specialty (US News) (2008)[35]

Just FYI treygus there is a lot of college eliteism on this site. It at times serves a purpose and may be accurate but when it comes down to it the best you can expect to get from most here is a list of schools as a starting point for your research. Look into schools and find out where thier graduates go after they graduate both in their careers and graduate schools. Also you should consider going somewhere you would be in center of the student body as far as stats go as it will allow you to graduate with a class ranking in accordance with the ammount of effort that you put in (as opposed to going to a school where you dont have to work to be on top or a school where you try your hardest but still graduate at the 50% level). Some great tools are things such as [College Search - Find colleges and universities by major, location, type, more.](<a href=“College Search - BigFuture | College Board”>College Search - BigFuture | College Board) that let you set up the search to meet your needs or the college search tool on this site. USNWR rankings can be a tool to get the names of schools you would not have otherwise looked at. Just remeber that how happy you are with your choice will depend mainly on how much you have researched the schools you are applying to.

I hope you’re referring to Columbia College in Chicago.

I will agree that what I put up is an odd assortment. I tried to hit the other solid Econ school in Texas with SMU and then started looking at the major finacial hubs and the schools in them. One city I did not name any schools for is San Francisco. You may want to look at a few schools near there as well.

Economics at UT is not under McCombs

columbia is worlds apart from northeastern in terms of prestiege
