Where should I apply?

I have recently graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a 3.87 GPA and scored a 170 on the LSAT.I also have over 2 years experience working at the Texas Senate (located in Austin), so it is safe to say I have some experience with law (intern). I have not applied to any Law Schools as I though I would like to get a job before attending law school. I have now changed my mind and will be applying as soon as I can. I wanted to know if I had any chance of getting into an Ivy League or T-14 law school. Your help and commentary are greatly appreciated.

You certainly do have a good chance at getting into T-14 schools. If you plug your stats into lawschoolpredictor.com, you’ll see that it doesn’t predict an automatic denial anywhere. Acceptances at Michigan, Duke, Cornell, and Texas (now in the T14, I believe); “weak consider” at Harvard and Yale; and a mix of “consider” or “strong consider” at the remaining T14s.

Congrats on such a great GPA and strong LSAT! You can poke around on lawschoolnumbers.com for more detailed statistical info on individual schools. If you want merit money, you’ll certainly qualify at some good schools, perhaps even some T14s.

I would first of all ask myself “why do i want T14?” Where are you planning on practicing? If you are planning on staying in Texas then I personally would look at the 15th school because recruiting in Texas will be stronger for UT than anywhere else.

If you are strictly looking for NYC big law then I would look at T14, but honestly your Texas volunteer experience will matter very little and your parents connections will matter even less in the big leagues, so this is something to consider.

Your big saving grace is of course the 170 LSAT, as your GPA could be good or poor depending on how soft your major is for T14.
