Where should I apply!?

Hey, I’m writing this for a student from India who’s looking to come to the US next year for undergrad engineering. Here are his criteria:

He’s looking for a good engineering school that isn’t insanely hard to get into (such as MIT, Stan etc…) but can still hold its own (preferably in the top 100 world engineering institutions.)

That gives decent financial aid to international students as he will not be able to afford it otherwise.

Can you please suggest some schools that he should apply to. Thanks.

p.s. Is getting into public universities harder if you are an international…i.e. do they cater more to the local crowd?

I think UT Engineering is good.

We need to know more about this person if we wish to give your friend accurate advice.

Okay...my estimates about his stats:

gpa: 96%
SAT: >2000 (Verbal and Essay will be less...Math will be close to 800)
SAT IIs: MathII, Science >750...most likely 800

Adequate ECs but may not be superawesome spectacular
Excellent Recs
Decent to good Essays

Engineering majors can go to either engineering colleges or the engineering departments of large state universities. Engineering admissions tend to be numbers driven and the two big numbers are the SAT I Math and SAT II Math IC/IIC scores.

I can't give a lot of information, but I think the issue is going to be about financial aid more than any other issue. Up until very recently, colleges did not provide any financial aid to foreign students. In the last two years, though, some of the very top schools went need-blind for internationals. I think you need to see how much of that has filtered down into colleges below the very top level. If you ask, I'll see if I can give you a copy of eng colleges, but the large universities typically have strong eng depts. Some are Carnegie Mellon, Georgia Tech, Stevens, Rochester Inst of Tech, Rutgers, Drexel, Case Western. You might try contacting a few and see what they say about finan aid for internationals.

thanks dufus...

any more advice guys? please help!
