I got wait listed at Deerfield Academy and Choate. Does anyone know if they have a reputation of letting students off the wait list into the school or if it is really rare?

I am also debating between St Andrews DE and Concord. Which better is better and does anyone know what the dorm/student life at each school is like?

Thanks!

Hello :)

I was also waitlisted at Deerfield (I know nothing about Choate, sorry), but from what I’ve read on here about Deerfield and their waitlists, they haven’t had to turn to their wait lists in the past few years. It is my top choice and I’m disappointed, but I would say move on from it, especially since you have other options.

As for St. Andrews DE and Concord, I don’t know anything about St. Andrews DE, but I also applied to Concord (I was waitlisted). I have not visited the campus, but from my interview and the reception, I have conceived Concord as a warm and friendly school. I have a feeling that they are nowhere near as competitive as Andover and Exeter but they still have rigorous academics and plenty of extracurriculars. My interviewer was plenty nice and I had a really nice time getting to know the school. The only bad thing I can say about Concord with my very much limited knowledge is that its campus is pretty small at only 39 acres. That shouldn’t be a problem though, considering its small class size in the first place, but it just surprised me, as my current school’s campus is 27 acres and we’re a day school.

Anyway, hope this helped, though you could probably learn much more from a current student, and good luck with your decisions.

Deerfield did take a few off the waitlist last year and perhaps if the weather is bad on Fridays revisit day and the food awful and the teachers in bad moods you might get lucky!. Sometimes you can tell by the message on the letter. If it says “you are very high up on the list we encourage you to wait” that is quite different from “sorry, this news is disappointing you are on the waitlist”. It also depends by grade. If you happen to be a 9th grade boy the picture is bleak. You can call them and try to get a read on the situation. Many legacy/siblings get these letters as a soft reject. While schools are being conservative no doubt Deerfield is one of the most popular schools with many “connected people” who might not opt to go elsewhere so those “acceptances” are probably 100% going to positively impact yield.

@bschooler: SAS and Concord are both excellent schools for the right person. That said, they are vastly different in setting and culture.

SAS is 100% boarding, is situated on a huge amount of land and beside a large lake. You will be around your classmates 24/7 mostly in that bucolic setting. It’s a very friendly environment and contrasts with an edgier feel at CA.

Concord Academy is in the town of Concord, which is a wonderful and vibrant place. The campus size is irrelevant, because the whole town will feel like your campus. If you like the idea of strolling out for a coffee or going shopping in your free time, this will work for you. SAT scores are higher than DAor Choate and comparable to Groton, PA and PEA. This school has a very strong performing arts program. The downside of CA is it’s more than 50% day students, so many of your friends will be arriving in the morning from Cambridge and heading home after school activities. I also understand that boarders are precluded from returning to their dorms during the school day.

Hope this helps.

^^<<sat scores=“” are=“” higher=“” than=“” da=“” or=“” choate=“”>></sat>

@Kraor…what is your source, please? thx

Thanks, Periwinkle,
Using these stats, I haven’t been able to call up DA, but the stats look pretty comparable between CA and Choate.

In Math, Choate’s mean SAT score is actually higher than CA:

CA mean is 674 vs. Choate mean is 678
range: 630 - 740 vs. 630 - 730

@rbg: Boarding School Review

CA: 2057
Choate: 2025

BTW, I have no horse in this race. Just providing some factual detail. :-)

I have a ranking of average SAT scores in the year 2009 from an educational consultant, it’s your choice to believe if it’s accurate or not. Concord’s average is 2040 in 7th place while Choate has a 1981 in 15th place. Just for reference, Exeter has a 2085 in 1st place and Deerfield as a 2020 one place below Concord. Other schools in the top 10 include Groton, St. Paul’s, Thomas Jefferson, Milton, Middlesex, Hockaday, and Hotchkiss. Surprisingly, Andover was in 11th place with a 2008 average score…

Anyway, like kraordrawoh, I’m just providing some information, don’t want to get caught in any arguments. :)

SAT scores aren’t engraved in stone. They vary with each class, as do the SSAT scores. Most schools now release the scores of the middle 50%.

Does anyone know if Boston College is moving to their waitlist this year/the odds of getting off of it?

This is the Prep School section of the forum… Try to college parts!

Anyone know anything about the Peddie Waitlist?

If you have any questions about SAS, I’m a current student.
