Where should I go?????

I made a thread in the general forum. But maybe I would get more response here...

Well I am considering Davis, UCSB, and Purdue. But I am at crossroads at all three colleges. Each having there own weaknesses and strengths. Also, I plan on appealing to UCSD and I would choose that over the three. But, I wouldn't mind going to these three if it does not pass.

I plan on majoring in Electrical, Chemical, or Bio Engineering. I got into Purdue for Undecided within Engineering, Davis and SB for Undeclared Physical Sciences/ College of Letters and science. I applied for undeclared to not risk rejection, I have seen that major change can be done with the right classes and a maintained GPA, so I am not too worried about that.

Davis seems to be a nice college, right now I am favoring it, but still am not completely sure... Purdue has the Engineering prestige (#9 in the country), but I hear its very difficult and weeds people out. SB seems to be a nice engineering school as well. The thing about SB is that the party school nature of it actually makes me shaky because I want to stay concentrated in college. I want to have fun, but I do not want to go over the top.

Price is kind of an issue. My parents will pay for Purdue if I want to go, but I think it will be 10k more. I want to know if its that much better then the other two that I have to leave CA and go there.

I plan on going to Grad school, so essentially I want to pick the best school for Grad school.

I lived in/by Purdue when I was a child so I know the surroundings, I plan on visiting the other two in the coming weeks.

So, please CC, help me out? Thank You!

I just looked into the three fields. Bio Medical Engineering seems very fascinating and it seems like a very fast and up coming field. Some sub field combine electrical, chemical and so on. Very intriguing field…

Can you guys compare and expand upon those fields and Bio vs Electrical in particular. I think that is the key for me to choose between these schools.

God I hope my SD appeal will pass through. =)

bump…

Some one please answer my questions??

Well I got into Purdue and Davis as EE major (rejected from SB T^T). If I were to pick one of the three, I would go with Purdue. I don’t think UCs besides Cal and LA can match a large university with main focus on engineering and become well known of it.

Thanks for the answer. More please! Also can anyone explain/expand upon the three majors and the school choice.

This is very important, if I cant get this information in the engineering forum. I don’t know where else I can…

Help me out…=)

I have one response…

UCSD is a GREAT school, if your appeal goes through, obviously.

I would pick Purdue, it’s worth it. Davis and SB are solid as well, but when it comes to engineering, it’s no Purdue. What do you plan on doing your Masters/Ph.D in?

I plan on doing my Masters, but I am not sure in what. I am leaning towards Bio Medical or Electrical.

For Bio, it seems like Davis is the best choice. So, I kind of wanted a comparison on Bio vs Electrical as well.

I do not want to make a judgment on attending SB till I have visited.

Essentially, which is the best school for Grad School?

EE and Biomed are two vastly different fields…Both are great, and will be in demand for a while. The salary (I think) is about the same. EE deals more with circuits, power systems, control, Telecomm etc. There’s a variety of subcategories you could specialize in from there…

Biomed engineers typically work in teams to evaluate medical products, MRI, medical machines, etc.

It’s really whatever interests you more…

If you want to do biomed, then I would suggest doing whatever the heck you can to get into SD’s masters program, after you graduate from Davis or SB.

With EE, you can pretty much stick with Purdue, it’s got a great undergrad and grad program.

[Sloan Career Cornerstone Center: Careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, Math & Healthcare](Career Cornerstone Center: Careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, Math and Medicine)

That link should help you decide between Biomed and EE.

Wow thanks for all the great info! I know… I wish I had SD, would have been a such a nice solution…

Do you anything about Purdue weeding people out, it just seems like an intense environment?

It’s intense, no doubt about it…professors are going to challenge you. Honestly though, if you want to get into some big engineering company, the intensity will actually prepare you well. Study Groups/Homework Groups aren’t too hard to find and it’s a big school, so you shouldn’t have trouble fitting in, at least if you aren’t a complete introvert. This is what my friend says, anyway. I don’t go there, so maybe it’s better if you get in contact with one of their alumns or visit yourself.

We have heard nothing but rave reviews about the Purdue Engineering program. It is excellent!

Purdue gave me their status, 40k. Davis is like 26k -_-

Other opinions please! Also on BME VS EECS! Thanks!

Help…

First of all, congrats on your acceptances, they’re both really great schools! =)

Some things to consider – are you planning on going on to graduate school? I know for me, I’ll be in school for a while so there’s a 97% chance I’ll enroll at my state school (Rutgers) to save for grad school.

Also, what are your career goals? (I’m sorry, that sounds like an applicatoin essay prompt, but I couldn’t think of another way to word it.) If you aren’t certain of that yet, what are your interests. Obviously engineering, but more of the tech side for EECS, or the medical side for BME?

As far as numbers go, Purdue’s engineering department is stronger overall at 9th (I believe UC Davis is at 33rd, which is still good), but for BME specifically, UC Davis is ranked higher at 5-6th. However, if you choose EECS, Purdue’s ranked higher at 10th.

So if you’re going by rankings exclusively (it’s also important to keep in mind that those aren’t the most reliable), UC Davis for BME, and Purdue for EECS. However, I think a huge part is considering which school you’d rather attend. For starters, one’s in CA, the other in IN, which I would imagine are quite different. Did you get a chance to visit the campuses? I know I thought I’d love Rice/Tufts/etc., but didn’t “get that feeling” on campus so I didn’t even waste money applying.

It’s all about what you want to do and what you’ll hope to do with your degree. Hopefully that helped, and best of luck with everything! =)

^Thanks for the answer!

I am planning on going to Grad School, and yes cost is a factor. So I am thinking it is better to save that money up for it.

My career goals is prob 95% in Engineering, right now I am leaning towards to BME, it just seems more intriguing to me at this point. Although, I do know how reliable and solid EECS is. But, I think I might be going into BME.

I have actually lived on the Purdue campus, and I have visited Davis. I liked them both. Going to SB on the 10th. Would love to stay in CA, but I wouldn’t mind going to Purdue. I would only want to go there if it is like miles ahead of Davis. But, you seem to be saying Davis has some good BME programs.

I submitted my appeal for SD. If that goes through, I would absolutely love to go there. So, I wouldn’t be making a mistake picking Davis over Purdue for BME?

Davis vs Purdue for BME? Bump!!
