Where should I start looking? 3.95 GPA 31 ACT

I have just recently started the college search process, and I am having a hard time even starting to look at colleges. I have had my eye on UW Madison for a while, as it is the top in state school, but I want to look at other options as well. I am most interested in Marketing, and specifically sports, but I don't know if I would want to do a sports marketing/management program, because I feel there would be more options with general marketing. I am also mildly interested in law school (Marquette has a good law school correct?). I would like to stay in the Midwest, and my family is relatively well off, but I will be paying a good portion of the cost. I have looked at a few out of state and private schools (UMich, NU, Iowa, Minn), but I am turned off by the difference in tuition from UW Madison which is a similar options. I am just looking for some suggestions of schools that have good marketing programs, and could be competitive in terms of cost with Madison. Thank you.

Minnesota has tuition reciprocity with Wisconsin:

You can only borrow $5.5K freshman year without a cosigner. Cosigning is not a good idea for parents (go to change.org and look at the petitions to have private lenders release parents from school debt after their children unexpectedly died). You should consider some good merit colleges: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/financial-aid-scholarships/1348012-automatic-full-tuition-full-ride-scholarships.html</a></p>

What exactly does this mean? How much will your parents pay? How much do you have saved to put towards college?

As Erin’s dad mentions, YOU can only borrow $5500 for freshman year. To borrow more (which is VERY risky especially as a Marketing major), would require willing and qualified co-signers who would have to pay back the debt if you couldn’t afford to (and many youngish business grads can’t afford to pay back significan’t loans).

Sports Marketing is often a grad degree. many schools don’t have it as an undergrad school. I would think the schools with big Div I teams would be where you should look.

However, with your stats (are you retesting), you could get some merit scholarships at some schools but they won’t be ranked higher than UW-M. Alabama (big Div I school) would give you a 2/3 tuition scholarship (about $16k per year), but if you got an ACT 32, you’d get free tuition (or a 1400+ SAT M+CR). Alabama also has a Tier I law school with low OOS tuition.

With a 3.95/31

There are very few schools (if any, you shouldn’t consider). I would say places like HYPSM would be a high reach (but then again, they are for practically anyone). The next level of selectivity – Cornell, Duke, Northwestern, Vanderbilt, for example, you may be a bit low, but there are certainly many admissions with students who have your stats.

Any other school, your stats are well within the acceptance range, though you should always have several matches and at least one or two schools that are safeties.

Since you mention finances as a factor, and it sound like you’re saying that you don’t expect significant need-based aid. Absent merit aid – your state school or a state school that has reciprocity are likely to be your least expensive options. Many other schools will offer merit-aid to students with your profile. Unfortunaly, not all of these are formula driven, so all you can do is apply to several and hope…
