Where should we go?

So.....me and my friend are sitting here at a computer trying to figure out what to do now that the college admissions process has left us in the dust (me at least). Anyway, our stats and such are not important at this point, so let's just focus on the possible scenarios.

FRIEND
Has been accepted at Duke, UVA, UCLA, Berkeley Engineering, and Penn Engineering. He wanted HYP, but is now deciding between Berkeley and Penn. Now, he wants to double-major in business and engineering, but didn't get into Penn's Jerome Fisher program, and is worried that he will have a very hard time transferring into Wharton as a sophomore. At Berkeley, he feels more confidently that he can get into Haas, but he really really loves Wharton. Now, he loves California weather, the kids at Cal, and the teachers at Cal. When he went to Penn, he didn't like it as much. Still, it doesn't matter to him whether or not he likes the kids/campus etc., he just really wants to go to Wharton. Any suggestions?

ME
Has been accepted at BU, UMiami (in Florida), and Skidmore Honors, waitlisted at Emory, Wesleyan, and Hamilton, and a GT at Cornell (meaning that if I get a 3.3 at any college for 1 year, I'm guaranteed a spot in Cornell's ILR program in 2009). Deciding right now between Miami and Skidmore, because I received scholarships there. I'm really hoping to get off of a waitlist, as I'd rather attend any of the other schools. I visited Skidmore last weekend and really liked it, but haven't had a chance to visit Miami. The plan is to submit a deposit at both, and fly down to Miami at some point this summer. Still, any suggestions/advice about which to choose, or how to get off one of the waitlists would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much for reading this!

Friend: Berkeley
You: Skidmore

I'm not sure if you're actually allowed to put down a deposit at more than one school.

Friend: Berkeley...it's almost impossible to transfer into Wharton and it seems like he would enjoy his college experience much more at Berkeley

You: Skidmore, then transfer to Cornell

Friend: UC Berkeley (this is a very good example of prestige considerations intruding on or maybe even overriding personal preferences)

You: Skidmore...and then to Cornell. Skidmore is going to keep you more in tune with your goal of getting to Cornell while U Miami could easily take you in another direction. Not that that is automatically bad, but would be a different path than what you now identify as your preferred destination, ie, Cornell.

I agree with the above.
