Where the #%$*#(@!*# can I take the PSAT???

I thought you weren't supposed to take the PSAT until sophomore, but now I hear students taking it in MIDDLE SCHOOL!!!

I was going to take it at a neighboring university last November, but they were charging $60 dollars!!

I found out later the local public school was offering it for 8 bucks.

Anyways, can I still take it?!!! I'm a sophomore BTW!!!

God this ****es me off SO much. What's worse is my mother is completely apathetic to it. She has the, "oh my son will be successful no matter what."

Gag me please.

thanks for any response!!!

it doesn't even matter till junior year for scholarships, unless you REALLY wanna take a real practice PSAT...

I don't care about scholarships, I want to take it now.

All my friends have taken it 2 or 3 times!!!

help?

I'll pm location if necessary.

pming location really won't help me, i don't know what schools in your area offer it. i'm surprised your high school doesn't.

haha, and the only time the score matters is if you get above a cutoff to get National Merit...you don't get a record of all your past PSAT scores like you do for SATs.

it doesn't matter that your friends have taken it 2 or 3 times, you can always buy a book and time yourself...just because they've taken it doesn't mean they'll score better.

You REALLY don't need to stress about this. And the best part of the PSAT are the scholarship opportunities during JUNIOR year.

oh, and i think they only offer it twice a year, that's what my counselor (who may or may not be correct) told me. Wednesday and Saturday of a week in October and maybe some other month? (ah then my counselor can't count!)

^ i think you can only take it in october, either on wednesday or saturday. best bet right now is take an official practice one and get ready for next year. ask your friends that did take it if you could borrow their test packets, which they get back. You can get answers online

They don't have it.

Are you sure??

There isn't some testing center or...??

Is there a place I can buy or print the PSAT and score my own test??

I rather take it in a controlled environment than at home.

I want to know where I'm at. I don't want to bomb my chances for a scholarship come junior year.

Question: If you score well on one section but bad on the other, do programs recognize this??

Perhaps super high on the math but average-low on the reading/writing...

National merit looks at your total score. idk about the other programs. i'm pretty sure the only official testing dates are in October. you might be able to find it online, but not on collegeboard.

if ya really want to get practice, take the SAT, it's pretty much the same, but harder.

also, a lot can happen in 9 months until the next PSAT.

I'm confused, what can happen??

Can I take the SAT now?!

I want practice!!!!

either register for the March 1 test @ collegeboard.com or buy the blue book

you can take the SAT as long as you register for it online, but are you asking about PSAT or SAT?

and colleges will only know if your total score was above a cutoff, not if you got an 80 on one and 40s on the other 2.

HSisOverrated, I suggest that you not take the March 1 SAT just to get practice for next year's PSAT. Just buy a book of practice tests to familiarize yourself with the test format. If you want a "controlled environment," just go to a nice quiet place like your public library and use the alarm function on your watch or cell phone to time yourself as you take the various sections.

Each time you take the SAT, it goes on your "permanent record" at The College Board and when you send your scores in with your college applications, ALL of the scores are on that report. You almost certainly will not do as well the first time you take the test -- especially as a sophomore and without any prior practice -- as you will later on. So think very carefully about that before you sign up for anything.

I heard you can cancel scores within 5 days of the test and it won't go on your record.

At least, according to collegeboard...

Can I take the PSAT now? Are there programs that offer similar tests or something??

When do people usually take the PSAT? How many times?!!!??

I'm not the motivated when it comes to self-serving stuff so it'd have to be in a CONTROLLED environment - not just showing up at the library with a stop watch.

Seriously.

SUGGESTIONS?!

When did your kids/you take the PSAT?

I just want to do what everyone else is doing. Can I take the PSAT multiple times in the same yeaR??

I don't want to blow my chances at a scholarship first time around!

So back to other question: Programs don't award students for high scores in x section? They only count combined score...?

You can get a review book to help you prepare for next October. You can get a PSAT book and/or an SAT book. If you want to take an SAT this year, you can do that. It will, as someone already said, become part of your permanent record, but it would also give you a sense of where you stand. If you do not do as well as you might have liked, it shouldn't matter much, as most schools will look at your best scores.

Many students take the PSAT in 10th grade and again in 11th grade. It is too late for you to do that now - it is just given in October. A review company might have a practice test session - you could ask. They are usually free. I don't know how accurate the scores are. If you think you have a good shot at a scholarship, I would recommend getting a book and doing a lot of practice tests. You want to make sure you are thoroughly familiar with the style of the test questions. All sections count for the scholarship - the three scores are added together to get a maximum score of 240 (80 on each section - critical reading/math/writing).

Can I take the PSAT more than once during junior year?!

What are these "review companies"?!

Is there a place that offers the PSAT or a similar test?!!

If not, can someone please recommend me a print-out test that I can take on my own?!!!

THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT TO ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And are you 100% sure these scores go on my permanent record? Is it common for students to take the SAT sophomore year?

I will be expecting fairly low scores, but I rather not have them come on up my transcript.

Would I be sending in all scores or just the highest ones?!

ARGH!

Really, I know it's not fun being frustrated, but I think you're making into a much bigger deal that it needs to be.

NO you cannot take it again before you become a junior - it's going to be October of your junior year.

The ONLY TIME THE PSAT REALLY MATTERS is your JUNIOR YEAR. I took the PSAT sophomore year, I did well, but I could've bombed it and it wouldn't affect this year. Some schools put them on transcripts and some don't.

The only scores colleges will see are your SAT. You must've skimmed over worried_mom's post...she said the SAT goes on there, not the PSAT. You don't even send in your PSAT scores, you would only mention National Merit awards.

let me try to answer some more of your questions...
There is only recognition for CUMULATIVE, not individual sections.
People can't take the PSAT more than once in a year...
Most people at most take it once freshman, once 10th grade, and once junior.
but seriously if you haven't taken a "real administration" - DON'T FREAK!
You don't send in "all the scores", the only time you send in multiple scores are the SAT, not the PSAT.
Seriously, just go buy a review book, there are tons out there...

And it's pretty much a one-shot test. You have one chance to perform when it matters.

And are you sure you're asking about PSAT or SAT? Post 8 says SAT, or was that just a typo?

Can I take the PSAT more than once during junior year?! no it is only given once, AP/advanced kids typically take one in sophmore year(october)only time it is given

What are these "review companies"?! well you can do all of it on your own,

Is there a place that offers the PSAT or a similar test?!! well not official tests, but review ie Princeton/Kaplan/private tutors

If not, can someone please recommend me a print-out test that I can take on my own?!!! go to your guidance office and ask if they have any practice ones or get the college board blue book and do SAT exams, there are 8 practice exams
THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT TO ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And are you 100% sure these scores go on my permanent record? Is it common for students to take the SAT sophomore year? Yes if you take an SAT any time after 8th grade it is part of all the scores you will send when applying, they see all of them

I will be expecting fairly low scores, but I rather not have them come on up my transcript.

Would I be sending in all scores or just the highest ones?! Schools usually only use the highest scores but they see all of them.

ARGH!

ALso look at the ACT exam, very time intensive, fast paced exam, however the benefit of the ACT they do not send all your scores, only the one you choose to send, so you can take it 100 times if you choose in a controlled setting and only send your best score.

yes............

HS, the caps-screaming isn't going to help you at all.

Find courses for the SAT, ACT, GMAT, LSAT, MCAT, GRE, and more at The Princeton Review.

I personally think it's a waste of money and you'd be much better off buying a few review books, maybe getting an adult to watch you so you don't slack off.

If you can't focus on a practice test how are you going to focus on the real one?

Don't blow out an artery over this...

Where/when can I take the ACT?!

The ACT is another college admissions test. No one can answer these questions for you, we don't know where you live or when you're free. Take some initiative and Google it.

YOU ARE A SOPHOMORE. You can start preparing, but you really are stressing out WAY TOO MUCH. I'd hate to see you get a B in a class.
