Hi,

I'm going to be attending FSU this fall for the first time. If I don't buy a meal plan, I would like to know where I can buy food from. Where are the supermarkets? Are they close to the campus?

There are two nearby Publix Supermarkets at
800 Ocala Rd
Tallahassee, FL 32304-1669
and
1700 N Monroe St
Tallahassee, FL 32303-5535

There is also the Trading Post on campus.

Are those supermarkets far from campus?
Are they within walking distance?

My son lives in Heritage Grove and the Publix is across the street.
There are also two nearby Albertson's Supermarkets.
1964 W TENNESSEE STREET Tallahassee FL 32304
1925 N MONROE ST Tallahassee FL 32303

Probably better to take the bus to the stores, but you can walk - just don't buy things like ice cream - it'll melt by the time you get to your room. ;)

You can purchase a cooler bag that you can use to bring home your groceries and it folds up small and convenient when not full. It keeps things cold or hot for 2 hours. I bought the California Innovations Earth Friendly Reusable Bag at my local Sam's Club for under $10. There are also plastic versions for less money but they don't hold up as well as this canvas bag with straps.

is it recommended that go shopping so we can prepare our own meals? i'll most likely be in landis or gilchrist, so it's required that i have a meal plan. should i still plan on shopping off campus?

That depends on the size of the meal plan you choose and whether you will want to make some of your meals yourself or not. Every room comes with a refrigerator, you can bring a microwave and each dorm does have kitchen facilities so it is really up to you.

I'm going to be in either Landis/Gilchrist too, and I'm going to get the 150 block plan. I don't eat breakfast and skip meals here and there, so I think 10 meals per week will suffice. I'm also going to bring my rice cooker, and I'll probably eat rice for a few meals per week. I usually get the 25lb bag of rice for $10 (although the price is increasing recently), which works out to 2.7 cents per cup (1 meal ~= 1.5 cups). :-)

Of course, in the dorm many people share rides to the store. ;) Make friends and you'll do fine.

yeahh, i was thinking about the 10 meal per week plan as well.

In the SUMMER - the only place on campus that is open 7 days a week 10:30am - 11pm and takes GARNET or FLEX BUCKS is CHILI's located in the Oglesby Union. The other eating establishments are either not open at all or open during limited hours and not on weekends.

If my D is in Smith hall with no kitchen, where will she get food if the restaurants and cafeterias aren't open?

Smith Hall is not open in the summer. The only available dorms in the summer are Cawthon, DeGraff, Gilchrist and Reynolds for FTIC. McCollum and Ragans are for non-freshmen.

Sorry Smith in Fall, DeGraff for summer :P

SUWANEE is open Monday-Thursday: 7am - 8am, 11:30am - 2pm, 5pm - 8pm
Friday: 7am - 8am, 11:30 - 2pm
It is weekends during the summer where she will need to make arrangements off campus unless she eats at Chili's using flex or garnet bucks or cash.

Those are the summer hours, right?
When is it open during the Fall?

Is it required to have a meal plan over the summer?

I'll be staying in Gilchrit which I know requires a Meal Plan during fall/spring but I'm not so sure about summer term...

there is a couple of "convinience store" like places she can get food. Honestly dont worry about it. she will find a way (like stealing food from the dining halls, but i never said that) :P
they just opened a chilli's on campus which they didnt have last fall when i started there... there are a lot of options!!!!

oh and all the supermarkets are NOT within walking distance no matter what anyone tells you. You are going to have to take a car and the bus doesn't go there, but luckily your son/daughter will have their own car or i promise they'll kno at least 1 person who can drive them to the store. trust me.
