where to eat near Muhlenberg

I am visiting Muhlenberg this week with my junior S. We will be staying overnight near campus and I am wondering if anyone has suggestions for places to eat dinner that night? Not looking for high end:) Thanks!

Carraba’s Italian Grill is decent. It’s about a mile from campus. Also look into Pistachio’s

Bellissimo’s Ristorante is excellent and very popular among Muhlenberg families (i.e., always booked for Parents’ Weekends)! Casual and reasonably priced. It is near campus although not within walking distance. The address is 1243 Tilghman Ave. in Allentown. The telephone number is 610-770-7717. I suggest reservations…especially if it’s over a weekend. We found out about Bellissimo’s from another parent on CC when we were going to visit MC for our son (who is now a sophomore there and loving it).

Enjoy!

West End Allentown options: Grille 3501 (upscale trendy), King George Inn (historic, traditional), Pistachio (casual trendy). Usual assortment of chains (Carabbas, Outback, Ruby Tuesday, Fridays)

Downtown options: Bayleaf (thai/fusion), Brewworks (brew pub)

Thanks for all the suggestions! We will be there tomorrow night - it is too bad the forecast is for rain when we will be touring the school. Anything else in the area we shouldn’t miss while there? Thanks again.

Thanks for restaurant recs. Perfect timing. We will be there this Tuesday. 2dtimearound - how was your visit? Thoughts?

The visit was very nice - we both liked the school. We ate at Bellissimo’s and loved it - wonderful food and warm and friendly people. The tour guide was more of a sports/math sort which isn’t a good match for my son’s interests, the first 20 minutes were about the athletic facilities and teams. One thing he is very interested in, whether he ends up majoring in theater or not, is the presence of lots of student run theater productions, so if anyone has any insight into that it would be helpful. He is also interested in student band activity, both things like an organized jazz ensemble and garage/rock bands and the availability of practice space. The tour guide didn’t know much about any of that. But we know we can get some of that information elsewhere. All in all, it is a contender. Very nice school.

Our d will be a theater major next year. We visited the campus in February for a quick weekend trip. We took both a campus and a theater tour. Our d also attended a class and auditioned. We were very iin the nation.mpressed by the warmth and friendliness and the theater program is one of the top ranked in the nation. Bellissimo’s had excellent takeout and delivered to our hotel room. Our last night we went to the Hibachi Steak House at 3227 Hamilton Blvd. in the Dorneyville Shopping Center. We weren’t expecting much but were in a hurry to get back to campus for a student theater production (excellent). The food was very very good. Our d was accepted at Wisconsin, Kansas, Drew, UC Riverside and Muhlenberg. We accepted Muhlenberg’s offer last week. Good luck.

2dtimearound - student run productions abound @ MC and they are excellent! We’ve seen several already and are headed there this coming weekend to see our son (a sophomore theater major) in another one. He’s been in a several student run productions (as well as mainstage performances) and they’ve all been beyond our expectations and very worth the trip to get there. In addition, musical ensembles and garage/rock/pickup bands are plentiful. There’s lots of interest among these multi-talented kids, and plenty of practice space for them to utilize. Student concerts/coffeehouses/cabarets and performance opportunities are also plentiful and frequent. Spending time in the theater department (sitting in on a class, talking with theater students) and a weekend overnight would really allow your son a taste of the talent and performance opportunities at Muhlenberg.

dreampoet- congratulations to your daughter on a wonderful choice. We’ve been hearing such fabulous things from our son who is home from MC for the long holiday weekend break. In addition to all of the great academic and performance opportunities he’s taken advantage of he has made many great friends at Muhlenberg. I hope your d will have as wonderful an experience there.

On another note, I’m glad that you both enjoyed Bellissimo’s! We’re looking forward to having dinner there this weekend after the show.

It’s kind of funny this thread came up. We are headed up to campus this weekend, too, as our D is in Orlando and we’ll get to see her final a cappella concert. She graduates next month. So she is very meticulously planning out where we’re going to eat this weekend (we’re going out Saturday and Sunday), based on the fact that mom and dad are paying for it, and it’s getting close to the time when she won’t be able to go to some of these restaurants anymore. And, she made reservations for dinner for the Saturday night before graduation almost two months ago! I can feel the pounds making their way to my hips!

Have to second Pistachio’s and BrewWorks for relatively inexpensive places to eat with decent menus. H will definitely miss BrewWorks.

2dtimearound–There is definitely a large presence in terms of theater and bands. As an incoming 2015-er, I have seen a lot of people speaking about creating bands and such on the Class of 2015 facebook group. If he is interested, I am sure he will find people!

OK… a foodie update. We went to Cosmopolitan last Saturday evening before baccalaureate, and it was fantastic. Fairly high end, and you might not feel comfortable in jeans there, but a wonderful dining experience; definitely a perfect place for celebrating something special!

Also have now been to Bamboo, which is right by Pistachio’s and really enjoyed it. It is BYOB, but there is a liquor store right next door (how convenient).

teri: I can’t believe your second one is already graduating!!!..have we really been on CC that long??

Congrats!

No rodney, of course not. D2 is one of those typical CC completely self-motivated, NMF, Phi Beta Kappa, 20 AP classes, full-ride, finish college in two years kind of kid… NOT!!!

Yep, four years. You’ve been on here less time than me, but have triple the amount of posts! Who’s been the busy one?
