Where to get the best Philly cheese steaks?

where can you get the best philly cheese steaks?

edit - also what are the best toppings (type of cheese, etc) to put on one

My favorite is Jim’s Steaks on 4th on South Street. that place has a lot of history there too you should check it out

^^ ill have to try that next time im in the area. i went to genos today and it was pretty good

We always like to go to Pat’s. They never disappoint.

Just had to…

lol pats/genos according to travel channel

try Geno’s. it’s in south philly.

toppings - i put nothing on mine except for cheese. onions and mushrooms are OK though.

I would not recommend Pat’s. The place is very popular among tourist because of all their advertising, but most people who have been in Philly for a while would probably agree that it’s not the best. Their steak is very dry and I don’t think they put enough cheese on it.

Jim’s is better, as is the place in Reading Terminal Market (which I strongly recommend visiting).

Tony Lukes!

i like Pats but ive had better

Pat’s is the biggest tourist trap for philly cheesesteaks… geno’s is not far behind. Both are terrible compared to places like Jim’s and Tony Luke’s.

However, the best cheesesteak in philly, or anywhere for that matter is John’s Roast Pork (coincidently they also have the best roast pork sandwich)… but they are only open weekdays till about 4:00 (they shut the grill off at 4:00 even if you are in line).

If you want to try a real philly cheesesteak, go to tony luke’s or john’s and grab one with sharp provolone and some fried onions.

And don’t get it without hots!

(and for the best hoagies its all about the bread)

don’t go to pats or genos. no respective Philadelphian eats there

oh man travel channel lied! lol

i went to genos yesturday. got a steak with american, onions, shrooms. added ketchup. was OK, kinda plain.

don’t say i didn’t warn you. jims is pretty good

Pat’s and Geno’s are pure tourist sites, and their quality is crappy. Jim’s is popular on South Street, sort of a hang-out area. But, as others have said, among locals the consensus choice these days would be Tony Luke’s on Oregon (in Deep South Philly), which is really on a different quality planet than any of the others mentioned. Fried onions, sharp provolone, and greens. (That’s the true Philly quirk – sharp Italian greens on hot sandwiches.) The only problem with steaks at Tony Luke’s is that once you try their roast pork sandwiches, it’s hard to go back to ordering the beef version.

guess i’m a tourist then…whoops.

Jim’s is my least favorite in the city. IMHO, it’s gross, and the Pat’s and Geno’s experience is of higher quality.

Tony Luke’s is definitely the real philly deal. I’m partial to Mama’s on City Line/Belmont though.

hahaha wow…i been in philly for like 8 yrs and still didn’t have a cheese steak yet…that needs to go on my to do list lol
