I have been accepted to both Ohio State and DePaul as a finance major, and am currently in the final process of deciding. My career goals are to work for a few years out of UG in a consulting/analyst position and then getting an MBA. I know based strictly on ranking this may seem an easy decision as osu is 14th ranked by USWNR, but DePaul, from what I've seen is also reputable (ranked 40 by businessweek). Having said that based on the recruitment and job placement stats of the two schools I see that DePaul places very well with the big 4 and other reputable firms. Compared to OSU, Depaul places a greater proportion of grads at the big 4 based on the statistics on businessweeks site. Also at DePaul I would be eligible for the finance honors program which also places well from what I hear. Would going to DePaul be the wrong move here, or will my career be ultimately unaffected?

How do you know consulting is what you want to do…before you even take your first college class?

I agree with goose, don’t limit yourself before you even start. With that said, one thing to consider is that DePaul is in Chicago and Ohio State is in Columbus. Chicago is a huge market for consulting and Columbus is not. I’d go DePaul.

I wouldn’t compare the percentages for Depaul vs OSU without taking into account the differences how many people at each school major in accounting. In 2010, OSU had 53 hires reported (Businessweek) to the Big 4 out of 290 accounting graduates (http://fisher.osu.edu/supplements/10/9317/Accounting2010.pdf). Depaul is mostly a finance and accounting school, whereas OSU has a mix of accounting, finance, logistics and operations.
