where to park(free) car while living in dorm?

thx

If you couldn’t get an on-campus parking permit, tough luck. It’ll be ridiculously hard to find a parking space on campus, or anywhere in Westwood for that matter. I had an on-campus job last summer and the most annoying part of the day was finding a place to park. I ended up finding someone on Craigslist and paying him $100 to use his parking spot in his apartment for a month. Also, keep in mind that most parking spaces have a time limit to them, so even if you found a place to park, you’d have to move your car repeatedly throughout the day.

It’s impossible to find free parking. I couldn’t get a parking permit last year so I ended up parking in westwood. I paid $100/month for parking in the garage next to ralphs

how about streets, I saw lots of cars on Gayley, Strathmore, etc

THere is usually time limit with the street parking. And some parts of the streets prohibit parking in certain hours.

There’s street parking sure, like on veteran before you hit levering (e.g. all alongside the cemetary). But it’ll pretty much only be available in the early morning when everyone’s getting to work. I saw a post here outlining other parking spots along campus but i’m not sure where it is.

There’s only a very few areas on the Westside of Los Angeles that has unlimited free parking. Actually, if you leave your car in the same spot for longer than 72 hours under city ordinance, it can be called in as abandoned and can be towed. Most areas have: (1) permit only parking; (2) restricted hour parking; (3) no night parking; and/or (4) weekly street cleaning.

But there’s nothing, absolutely nothing, close to the dorms. Except maybe Veteran, but I haven’t looked at the signs posted there lately. Also – if you do decide to park there, there’s no guarantee that the spot will still be there when you move your car!

expect to pay 100$/mo for parking, else your new part time job is moving your car around.

you will probably spend 2 hours a day finding parking, walking back home or to class

I highly recommend getting a parking spot (standard rate is $100, you can probably find non-tandem for this price too). Westwood police are hungry for your money and I have many friends who have gotten tickets. Yes, there is 2 hour free parking on the apartment streets and after 6, its unlimited until 8 am. Unfortunately, like everyone said, you are going to spend hours looking for that spot and its way too much of a hassle

good luck!

Is this really true? I see a ton of cars here in North Village on the street parked for 3-5 days at a time. I haven’t seen anybody towed (just ticketed occasionally.)

There’s really plenty of spaces, including perfectly OK overnight spaces. I’m guessing there’s a couple hundred total. The problem is more that there’s so many more cars than spaces that it takes hours to drive around and wait for a space to open.

I’m walking down Veteran on Monday to see if it’s applicable to park there and will post the results here. I’m in Rieber Terrace at the moment and want to have my car nearby.

Just a note,… police will start enforcing and ticketing apron parking in the north village.

@ tetra –

Yes – both Calif. Veh. Code and setion 80.73.2 considers a vehicle “abandoned” after 72 hours. See
LADOT

What happens in real life, though, is that the cars don’t get cited (or towed) unless someone reports the vehicle. Then LADOT goes out, checks out the vehicle, and generally first tickets it. Then if nothing happens, they have it towed. Reporting it is key to these steps being taken.

As for “plenty of spaces” – once again, finding them is key (and not easy) and as UCLAColumbia just mentioned, the enforcement of the prohibition of Apron parking is going to double the difficulty in finding a space. Tickets for apron parking are $58 and they can ticket once a day. Makes that $100 a month for a “real” parking space look really, really good.

So I just walked down Veteran and a bunch of streets in between the university apartments and dorms. I walked all the way down to almost Santa Monica Blvd.

Veteran seems to be the best bet, though there are so few spaces available.

The law that you guys cited above this post is making me think I may not want my car back for these next 9 months. Sucks too cause there’s so much to do that I want to do.

Currently, I’m thinking about either not having a car at all… or, getting my car back and finding an applicable parking space solution…

IF anyone can point me in the right direction for finding a lower-priced parking spot, I’d really appreciate it.

This is seriously driving me crazy. I miss my car. I need my car.

I’m wondering if parking permits are still available? I’m really not wanting to bite the bullet and pay $900 a year simply to park my car…

I would love it if anyone had any solutions.

Just sack up and pay the money.

Be honest - you could save the 900 by parking it a couple miles away… but when are you gonna randomly say “hey, lets go somewhere” and then add in “after I walk a few miles and then struggle to find a spot when we get back?”

What do you really need a car for in Westwood anyways? Anything even remotely distant is easily accessed by public transit.

^I concur. Are you a freshman holiday? Trust me when we say you can get to most places in LA by public transit. Santa Monica, the Grove, K-Town, Mitsuwa, Rodeo Drive, Getty, LACMA, Century City, Downtown LA (Disney hall/Olvera/china-town/J-town), Venice Beach, and more are all accessible by blue bus/metro. Part of the fun was taking the bus with a group.

$100 a month for renting someone’s spot in the apt’s is actually less then $900.

I’m a 3rd year transfer. I’ve gone to the S.M. Pier with my floor this past weekend and went earlier tonight to the Observatory w/ them as well.

I do enjoy those outings though at times (about once or twice every week or two) need to drive somewhere for a meeting for work. It’s just more leisurely to go in a suit in my car, taking my time instead of taking a couple of buses to travel 15+ miles (to & from).

This article is really helpful and has info on where to park at ucla if you are living in the dorms:[Finding UCLA Parking - A Complete Guide](http://blog.parkme.com/2013/03/08/ucla-parking/)

It says there are a bunch of streets with free street parking, shows you how to get a parking pass, and shows you other lots in the area that you can park at for cheap
