I'm a non-music major (CS) and living in an off-campus apartment. So I'm just wondering is there a place where I can play piano for free on campus, like the piano rooms at dorms?

If you want everyone to hate you but want a good sound, play in Mudge. There’s a lovely full grand that’s tuned in the library and the sound is gorgeous. However, all of A2 (the floor above) can hear the playing, so play during the day if possible. My room was the one above the piano and we would talk about the various ways we wanted to murder people who decided to play Beethoven at 2 AM on a Thursday. You don’t have to be a freshman to play in Mudge.

If you want a more private playing experience, Morewood Gardens has a couple of upright pianos in soundproof chambers near the first floor lounge. You check out the keys from the front desk, I think.

The Rez also has a piano I’m pretty sure - I’ve seen someone playing it when I’ve gone by the front windows. But I don’t know how that one plays or whether it’s got good privacy. Again, you don’t need to live in The Rez to play there.

west wing has a piano, but it’s in a room right next to the cluster so a frazzled CS nerd will probably yell at you. It would be me, but I long ago invested in bose noise-cancelling headphones to keep my sanity in public work areas.

we have a beat down piano in hamerschlag that ive heard people play.
yay?

Almost ten years ago now when I lived in Donner there was a piano or two in the soundproof practice rooms in the basement.

I imagine there’s gotta be one somewhere in the CFA building you might be able to get access to, as well.
