Where would you put JHU?

Of the top schools in America (aside from US News and World Report) where does Hopkins stand?

With the middle Ivies, (not HYP), Duke, U Chicago, Notre Dame, Rice, etc. I'd say that general region.

above duke and u of chicago, dartmouth, cornell,
below stanford harvard princeton etc.

Ambitiousteen - sorry but whats the "etc" to which you refer?? lol

etc=upenn, mit maybe?

well etc=yale and what not
columbia.. mit, caltech... only cuz they got more noticed earlier on.....JHU is much more well-rounded than caltech in my opinion

That's true; CalTech is very narrow. I don't know if I'd put it above Dartmouth, though. I'd say it's about equal to Cornell. Oh, and Northwestern or Wash U; we forgot those.

please give me something good about dartmouth... i havent heard anything... nor have i seen good research produced from them....

I think JHU holds it's own against any school. For example:

JHU Sciences kills Yale Sciences (duh)
JHU Size kills Cornell's Size
JHU UG Research opportunities kills Dartmouth UG research opportunities
etc.

Looking at all the top schools, they all have (+)'s and (-)'s. Just depends. JHU rules either way in a lot of areas.

Yah and talk about rebooting Hubbell telescope space mission... whos on top now (insert male/female dog)!! LOL

Actually Dartmouth spends more on undergrad research than any Ivy (COHE). Is spends the most on advising of the Ivies. It has the third best business recruiting. It produces the wealthiest grads in the country. It is #7 in the US at placement into top graduate schools ike Harvard law and Harvard med.

In my experience JHU falls into the WashU and Rice category. Below HYPS, Brown, Dartmouth, Penn, Columbia, Caltech, Duke, Northwestern...above Vandy and Emory.

^yeah, that probably just about sums it up. (Well, based on SAT scores, etc.)

First and foremost, I'm not saying any school is better or worse than Hopkins, just different and no matter what you look for, you can see truly amazing things about any top institution depending on what you want.

Second, the assessment of a great undergraduate experience is not how wealthy their graduates are - and anyone who thinks otherwise has a misguided assessment of what an undergraduate education is and should be.

For example, if you want a social scene that centers around Greek Life, Dartmouth may be for you because this is a characteristic of the college (same with Princeton and Eating Clubs). If you want a college where the social scene is spread throughout the undergraduate experience, then JHU may be a better choice... it just depends on what each person wants.

Similarly, if you want a tight-knight community, Dartmouth or JHU maybe for you, but Cornell is probably not the best choice with 13,000 undergraduates. Once again, apples, oranges.

Further, if you want faculty that produce scholarly publications at the highest level, Johns Hopkins has thirty (30) departments rated in the top 10 as being the most productive (works published and cited by others). Dartmouth had four (Cognitive Science, Various Health Professions, Toxicology & Environmental Sciences). Chronicle Facts & Figures: Faculty Scholarly Productivity Index

They are just different. That's the best thing about colleges here, if you look hard enough, you can find a place that is right for you.

Does this have any basis, whatsoever?

Yah... so far all ive seen is that the top 5 business people in the world arent from dartmouth.. there from india... top 10 richest people in the world coincidentally aren't dartmouth graduates at all... dartmouth sucks... the only reason why it is considered good is cuz of small class sizes and affiliation with Ivy league schools... if JHU was built in 1700s, it would be apart of Ivies to... the research produced by dartmouth fails in comparison to JHU, and on top of the dartmouth students leave dartmouth to go to JHU grad school or other ivies... seriously... this is all just taking in "years of experience of being a university" thats all... other than that I dont see it stacking up to JHU... dartmouth, cornell by far dont deserve their spots... Long years of being a university plays a big role thats it...

by the way... world rankings from UK.. puts JHU as 10th best university in the world... above DUKE and NORTHWESTERN...

and dartmouth

It really is more about fit then useless rankings. Wife went to Hopkins and hated it, although she agrees it is a great school and it has always opened doors for her. Child goes to Chicago ( turned down Hopkins) and loves it. Chicago is just a better fit for her. Are they both great schools. Absolutely. Are they of equal quality, even if U.S. News and the London times puts Chicago a few schools ahead. Certainly, just different. Don't waste time on thinking about which school is a few points ahead. I think all agree that Harvard, Yale and Princeton have the most prestige, but after that I don't think it really matters when you are talking about top twenty five or so.

^Hopkins and Cornell were founded about the same time.

Completely agree - fit fit fit!
