My mom wanted me to apply to Colby because it's in Maine, but I'm already applying to Lafayette, Hamilton, Colgate, Haverford, and Trinity, so another LAC is overkill and I don't really want to stay in state anyway

My parents also wanted me to apply to Harvard or Yale, but they don't understand how hard it is to get in so I'm not applying there either

I don’t really want to go anyway. They just think since they’re so good I’ll want to go if I get in, and that their financial aid will result in me getting pretty much a full ride (which won’t happen even on the slim chance that I was accepted)

yeah. I’m pretty sure people over 40 don’t know how tough it is to get into college nowadays. I have a decent shot at some good schools though. I can’t complain.

My mother hasn’t said she wants me to apply to Cornell, but I know she does (it’s her alma mater).

My mother said she wanted me to apply to Princeton. She also picked out one school she really wanted my sister to apply to, and my sister fell in love with it when she visited, so I figured, mother knows best, and I’m applying. Besides that, the supplement is adorable.

And I’m applying to Cornell. When I say the schools to which I’m applying I sound like a prestige whore, but I’m really not.

My dad’s really pushing Harvard and Williams. Both my parents came from affluent schools years ago, and so their concept of getting into college is soooo off, especially since my mom made the very conscious decision to send us to public school as a social statement against her WASPish upbringing. I love my school, but I don’t think my mother quite realizes that I have a small fraction of the resources available compared to her. They’re pretty hands off about the college process though, which has been nice. I picked my schools to visit with basically zero “You really shouuuuuuld visit ____,” and they’re working out weekends to go see them.

yeah same here about them being hands off, I guess it’s just annoying that they’re like “you know, all that money from Harvard would be reaaalllly nice…” when I don’t even want to go there, nor would I probably get in or have time to waste writing essays for the supplement

Yale because of financial aid and MIT because I’d be a legacy. However, like the parents of the OP and glassesarechic they do not know how hard it is to get in to these schools.

My parents haven’t really pushed me to apply anywhere except for Rutgers, as a sort of financial safety, in case anything happens, so I have.

Other than that, they’ve asked me what schools I’m looking at, my dad is always like oh how about U Conn or Penn State. Basically big D-1 schools (he watches a lot of college football/sports/etc.) I doubt I’ll apply to any of those though. And my mom want me to apply to Catholic ones.

But in the end I make them drive me hours away to go visit my tiny little LACs. :)

My mom is totally the opposite. She want me to attend the state U flagship, since they pretty much gave me a free ride, and gets mad when I wanted to go to a LAC school instead.
Now, as my applications are all done, I’m thinking of just applying to the state school. I got the grades and ec’s to get into my LAC, but SAT was dead meat. Oh well…

My mom is making me apply to Vanderbilt, because of it’s a) financial aid and b) educational quality. I’m not very interested in it, because it is farther than I want to be from home, it’s bigger than I’d like, and I don’t think I’d really fit into its social scene.
