Hello, I am from Maine.
I am looking for boarding to apply to for the fall of 2012. I am looking early on purpose. I am a good athlete. I play soccer, ski race (3rd at ME states), i play ice hockey, lacrosse, and tennis. I also sail very competitively in the summer. I am a straight A student (public school). I am always on the honor roll and I am a member of my schools' leadership committee. I want a coed school in the New England area with about 300-ish students. I am taking all honors next year. I need help finding schools!!!!!! Where do you think i should look, and where do i have a reasonable chance of getting in?!

Im not much of a chancer type of person, but you have a decent chance I should say. It seems you are looking for a small school, most these prep schools have 800+ students, but a good school that is small is Deerfield, thats the smallest one I can think of.

Do you think I have much of a chance there?

just for information:
my sister goes to holderness school
my other sister goes to St Marks
All of my relatives attented St. Georges
My great uncle went to Middlesex
My dad was the hockey coach at Middlesex for a little while

I can see you going to Deerfield, however I would like to correct one thing. Actually, most prep schools are small (about 200-300 students), Andover and Exeter are just a few of the biggest prep schools. I would look into the schools that your family goes/went to (especially Middlesex).

Awesome! Thanks you soo much! Also, how selective are those schools? What should I expect to get on the SSAT’s?

If you have a 80-100 percent on your SSAT thats good, but remember SSAT isn’t a make or break type of thing. Deerfield is pretty selective about 23% acceptance rate.

Ok Thanks! When they look at the SSAT’s what do they look at? The scores? or the percentile?

Both come into play, I’m pretty sure that it ends up not mattering. Just try your hardest (getting into a school like Deerfield, Andover, and Exeter) you will need at least a 90% unless you have a hook.
If you don’t already know, a hook is something that makes you stand out from other applicants. Andover said that 75% of the full application they recieved were “qualified” students, you have to make the Admissions Officers (AO) want to have you at the school (whatever the reason is, you have to figure it out).

I’m not sure I want a school as selective as those. I was thinking along the lines of st Georges or middlesex. Do you think I have good chances there? Also, what are some schools like that? What about Milton?

Those are all really good schools, but just remember that selective schools mean a different crowd of people. Those schools may attract a different set of applicants then St. George’s or Milton (no offense to anyone who attends). Your credential are very good, and athletics seem to be your strong point, Deerfield is known to be a good school for athletes. Deerfield has a very “home style” enviornment that includes sit down meals and less students (meaning you will have a better connection with the faculty due to small size).

How slim are my chances at deerfield?

About 23% to be honest. Just remember that it’s ok to put yourself out their, some have told me that it’s better to just see the rejection or waitlist instead of being left wondering what would have happened (others don’t agree). I’d be happy to give you more information, but make sure to go on their website (just google Deerfield Academy). They have a whole bunch of great information, along with a 2009 viewbook.

Ok, thank you very much! What do you think about other schools? Could you tell me about 5 to look at that I would be a good applicant for?

overandover do you know anything about peddie school?

Look at Tabor, Worcester Academy, Suffield, Brooks, St. George’s

Super! Thank you! Do you think I’ll have a good chance at middlesex?

Sorry for the late reply, and yes you do have a good chance for middlesex.

I do not know much about peddie, sorry :(

Five schools you should look at are:

Hotchkiss
Deerfield (PLEASE)
Middlesex
Andover or Exeter
Avon Old Farms (All boy, just in case)
Emma Willard (if your a girl, lol)

If you need any more help, please feel free to pm me or ask me on here.

I’m a girl, so if you happen to be a girl, I know alot more girl schools that offer a challenge. I know you are looking for co-ed, but it’s good to keep your options open (single-sex schools aren’t that bad).

Thank you! And yes, I am a girl. Do you attend a boarding school?

omg! It didn’t send me an update from this post! I am SO SO SO sorry for the late reply.
Actually, no, I don’t attend a boarding school. I have done my research (I know, not good enough), and would be happy to tell you any information you want (I usually stick to girl’s schools and the “prestigious” schools)

Some more girls schools are:

Miss Hall’s (challange)

Miss Porter’s (challange)

Emma Willard (in NY, pretty artsy)

Foxcroft (not challanging, but the girls come from really nice families who have been going to the school for generations)

Westover (rolling admission)

Culver Girl’s School (right next to a military school)

I would really like to go to Andover, but I am too young to apply. I will be applying in 2 years, but I have done my research
If you need any more info on ANYTHING please private message me!
