I think SMBSMOM makes a good point. My son is in hall style, Horton. He is glad he is in a “freshman” dorm, and he is ready to get out of the dorm. Too loud, wants some privacy, etc. But - he also says that it is a good freshman experience, and provided the best way for him to meet a lot of other kids. He is OOS btw.

What’s everyones thoughts on rooming at Granville as a freshman?

My son is at Granville and loves it. His room was renovated right before school started and it’s nice (for a dorm). He is staying at Granville for his sophomore year also. I believe they will continue to renovate rooms this summer. I’m not sure what the timeline is for all rooms to be completed. The location is very convienient for classes and for Franklin Street. There are many freshman at Granville, so you do still get the freshman dorm experience.

There have been a lot of past threads about Granville being more difficult if you are OOS and or not Greek. I think the implication was that most of the kids are in-state, know each other, and the majority go Greek.

My son is instate, but not greek. He has no plan to go greek and does not feel out of place or pressured to go greek. Of the 4 guys in his suite, only one went greek. The smartest thing to do would be to visit and talk to kids who live there. I think Granville has a facebook page, maybe you can go there and ask questions. Also, with 80% instate to 20% out of state at UNC, the out of state kids will be a minority no matter where they live.

Okay, so I know I have little to no say in housing as a freshman. However, on the housing application I heard it asks for your top three choices. I’m not really sure at all about any of the options. I’m assuming most of them are pretty similar. The “Manning” ones looked the nicest due to being newer (if I’m not mistaken) and Morrison looks really nice. However smbsmom’s post about it not really being fully freshmen scares me as an OOS student.

I know there is no one answer to the North v. South as a freshman debate and I know there is not one “nicest” dorm, but what are considered the best few? Or ones to avoid?

What I’m looking for? Suite or hall style doesn’t matter. A basketball court right outside the dorm would be nice (I saw a few of them with it) but it is by no means whatsoever required. I’m a big ping-pong player but Morrison was the only dorm I saw that listed saying they had a table. I’m looking for a place with a great “freshman experience” but also isn’t the most rundown dorm in the world. So I guess I’m still searching for that happy medium :)

Thanks!

I’m out of state and I applied to live in Granville, because my parents like the meal plans offered by Granville and because my mom stayed there when she was in college. Does anyone know if sending in the application secures my spot there? Or do I need to fill out the other housing application as well?

CarolinaGirl - My son signed up for Granville as soon as he was admitted with the first deadline. They sent us a contract right away and everything was secured. I don’t believe he sent anything in for campus housing. The people who work at Granville are very nice. If there is something you’re not sure about, call them or send them an email. I have found them to be very helpful.

Thank you so much! I didn’t think that I needed to, but I didn’t want to end up without housing. Calling Granville is a great idea!

As a freshman living in Hinton James, i can say that the walk is absolutely TERRIBLE. On the biting winter mornings, I wish that I lived in Morrison to shave off about 10 min of my walk to North Campus (I say 10 min because no one knows how long it will take to cross that darned intersection). I have friends who live in Morrison who are freshman and they seem to love it. Even though you may be the only freshman in your suite, there is always that suite next to you. Going out and meeting people is what college is all about!

how much do allergies/ashtma help with getting into the dorm you want? is it VERY LIKELY you’ll get your first choice?

Manning East is a good choice for freshman, it’s Horton and Koury- both nicer and newer. If you are lucky enough to get Koury you also don’t have to cross the street. This is south Campus.

Can anyone vouch on how Cobb’s dorms are? I got into the Honors Program so there’s a strong possibility I’ll be staying there, although I’m more of a “social” person and like to party etc, so I want to know if I’ll get the TRUE Freshman experience at Cobb.
Thanks in advance!

You should ask about their policies, rules, etc. I believe Cobb has quiet hours, have not heard about this in Horton. One student I know has liked it - going to stay there again, nice roommate. Another one - did not like it, did not like her roommate a lot - felt the floor was uptight and it was not fun. Both are smart kids, study a lot. Some of it depends on your roommate and floor … and I think you will find it to be less social than other dorms.
