Which academic departments/programs are the strongest at ND

Would it be a bad idea to enter the College of Engineering if I'm admitted? I've been told that Notre Dame is more about letters and arts rather than science and engineering.

well the school is founded upon a liberal arts education, so the Arts and Letters from my perspective is better known. But i do have a friend who is a Aeronautical Engineering major and got a paid summer internship with Boeing this summer as a frosh. so it can't be that bad

Notre Dame has a very good relationship with many top engineering companies, (GE, Boeing, Lockheed to name a few). They also sponsor a separate Engineering Industry Career Fair with many companies in attendance looking for engineers. The good thing about ND with regard to engineering/liberal arts is that if you find out that you just really don't want to major in engineering, it is very easy to switch out of engineering into another major- for example- liberal arts. At tech schools and many of the top engineering schools, you would most likely have to change schools as a liberal arts program does not exist or at best, is very minimum.

I got into Architecture and I've been told that ND's program is pretty solid. A tour guide told me once that ND has the third ranked undergrad business program. I don't know what else.

I have to think that engineering will only get better with a gazillion new square feet of floor space next year in Stinson-Remick. As stated, the upside is that if you don't like engineering it's pretty easy to go in to Arts & Letters or Science. And if you feel the calling to both engineering and Arts & Letters you can generally get a Reilly (sp) scholarship for the fifth year to finish your dual degree.

While ND may be known for its liberal arts education, the business school here is very highly ranked (top 5 at last check). In the business school, finance and accounting were very strong. However, in the present economic climate, finance may be suffering, so that may not be a good option for the next few years.

In the liberal arts department, the great books program (Program of Liberal Studies), philosophy, theology, history and political science are all well regarded.

Well, actually, all the liberal arts departments are well regarded. There isn't much of a disparity between the best and the worst of the main departments.

Our Irish Studies Department is the best in the world.
