I plan on majoring in ChemE, and have will have passed the AP exams for Chem, Calc BC, and Physics C (both) by the time I (hopefully) enter Rice. Any idea as to whether or not these will get rid of certain requirements, or at least place me into higher classes? I really don't feel like sitting through this stuff again. Thanks.

I’ve heard that classes that you have to take for your major won’t count though. Only classes that can be used as distribution credit.

Most AP/IB scores can’t be used for distribution. There’s only a few outside of DIII (if any) that count.

If the credit is counted under the course number required for your major, you are considered to have completed that requirement. However, it’s generally recommended to take the course at Rice if it’s required for your major, as you don’t want to get into upper-level classes and suddenly find yourself behind. Whether to retake these courses at Rice is a decision for you to make after talking to your advisors and current students about it and depends largely on how confident you are about the material and how much of a hurry you’re in to complete requirements.

Taking the Rice equivalent courses won’t necessarily be like sitting through an AP course again. They tend to be more rigorous.

If I recall correctly, all of the APs you mentioned should translate directly to course credit, so they’ll get you out of both major requirements and distribution requirements unless you retake the course at Rice, in which case the AP credit is replaced with the Rice credit.

Ok, that’s what I needed to know. Thank you very much.
