finally somebody else has garraty! i find that at times it's pretty silly/quotable.

"I personally like the immaturity of The American Pageant - the random metaphors make things more interesting when you read about boring dead guys."

Yes! My personal favorite line was something about Union and Confederate soldiers sitting down to a (figurative =D) "love feast."

And, thanks to the American Pageant, I will always remember that Polk didn't run for a second term because of his severe diarrhea.

^LOL

This was from the Brinkley book, but was it Zachary Taylor who died from indigestion after eating a hot dog at a Fourth of July celebration?

deenierah--haha yeah...i always remember the line that said something along the lines of "factories sprouted up like mushrooms after a spring rain"

american pageant

The American Nation by John Garraty and A People's History of the United States by Howard Zinn.

My two favorites went something like this:

"Slavery was a cancer in the bosom of the south."

"The people flocked to the virgin bottomlands."

The American Pageant.
haha my favorite line was something like "The people were remarkably fertile, even if the soil was not."

i took it last year, but my school uses "A People and A Nation" by some lady named Norton.

it was ok...informative, but really really dry.

American Pageant:

"in came the sixties, rocking the baby cradle of social stability to sleep"
(or something)

actually brilliant.

I also love the line about how imperialism caused indigestion in America's stomach. Ha.

That's so true.. And there are a couple of little notes where you know they're just trying to entertain themselves.

On an unrelated note, I accidentally took home a class-only copy of American Pageant (Which is in very bad shape). And.. it is to live in my house forever. My teacher never noticed. Mwahaha.

garraty. it's my baby.

America: Past and Present. It's long and dry. But I guess informative...we'll see how informative in May...

kalikula-- me too! a copy of garraty APPEARED in the locker i share with a friend...
me: by the way, i borrowed your apush book. just so you knew it didn't disappear.
her: dude, i thought that was yours. mine's at home.
me: nope. where the hell did we get an extra garraty from?
we're not complaining.

american pageant. pretty good book but their tests are specific as H3LL
