Which better: Admitted UCM(Cs), UCR (Physics), SFSU (Cs), SJSU (Physics), CSUEB (CS), UCSC waitlist

Which one is better for my child got: Admitted to UCM(Cs), UCR (Physics), SFSU (Cs), SJSU (Physics), & CSUEB (CS), but UCSC waitlist. ??
We live in San Jose city.

Better in what way?

Does your student want do to study CS or Physics? Will they be happy closer to home or farther away? Are there any financial restrictions? Which school does your student like the best?

CS, or change major from physics to biology. But what schools are hard to change majors or selecting classes?
No financial issue.
No prefer one.
UCSC Waitlist could be priority if CS major.

Much easier to change from CS to another major like Biology than the other way around, so I would narrow it down to UC Merced, CSUEB and SFSU. Out of the 3 schools, CSUEB’s proximity to Silicon Valley and the jobs/internships available are worth heavy consideration. UC Merced would be my 2nd choice since the UC’s do have good CS programs (no experience with CS at UCM in particular) but attending a new school, probably many good research opportunities available and maybe being a “big fish in a small pond”. SFSU would probably the most difficult to get classes due to impaction but your student needs to weigh academics along with social life.

If your student wants to switch to Biology or CS at UCR, then the links below describe the criteria:

http://student.engr.ucr.edu/policies/requirements/majorchange/cs.html

Remember there is no guarantee with a major change even if meeting the criteria.

Has your student visited all the campuses? I am sure there must some preference since all are very different.

Great feedback from gumbymom, really!!

After mid of Match, I asked my child to try to list prioritized schools, and I remind my child to search more informatio and may change minds until Apri 1 or mid of April later .
My child listed priority#1 and changed for different considerations.

1st Day. SFSU for CS, it has more job/interns, ( thought UCM has less funding.)

3rd Day. UCM for CS, it’s new school and more chances to biology major, (thought SFSU is old and crowd to take classes.)

1 Week. SJSU physics, close to home; (thought, may change major then.)

2nd week. SFSU for CS, (due to hard to get high scores of Physics classes and hard to change major in SJSU.)

10 days, I encourge my child to visit CSUEB, UCM, and UCR. (We visited SFSU & SJSU.)

Confirmation from my child is, no physics major.

Today, i tried to get suggestions / different sounds from College Confidential website. Next, We’ll visit every admitted campus…

Another, UCSC waitlist, worth of waiting and giveup deposits on UC and CSU? anyone knows his/her major on waitlist? When will get result?

Waitlist applicants hear after May 1 so enroll at another school until you hear otherwise. Losing the enrollment deposit is up to you if you decide the acceptance from the waitlisted school is worth it.

Might deposit one CSU one UC…

Just my subjective opinion but all my friends who went to CSUEB hated it. Said it felt like community college, filled with kids for whom the school was a last resort, who didn’t really seem to care about college at all.

As an aside, your student should only be committing to one school – whichever UC or CSU they select – and not one of each. Depositing as your post #7 suggests, is not allowed.

Additionally, it does not encourage a student to move past the decision-making phase into the ‘buying a sweatshirt’ phase.

Sorry to be the finger-wagger in the crowd…

You cannot deposit in 2 schools as stated by @hop. If you do and when the schools find out (they always do), you will lose not only the deposits but the acceptances will be rescinded. Do not take that chance. I also agree with @hop, get him excited about one of the admitted schools on his list and if he gets into UCSC off the waitlist, then it will be a pleasant surprise.

CSU East Bay may not be a top CSU nor the most exciting Undergrad experience, but the job prospects for CS grads is very good if you go by payscale.com and glassdoor.com.

Thanks for let us know, we didn’t research any Deposit rule yet (~~ by 5/1)… but heard from my friend experience.
By now, It’s a dilemma to decide but choosing CS major , we removed Physics ones.
–Wonder whether hard to take classes then students will spend 5-year to graduade in SFSU? anyone heard that?
–OR, choose UCM no worry on selecting classes?
–CSUEB is very close to commute, but also SFSU… in 45 minutes.
–Does UCSC open classes around Great America (Santa Clara) ? or that site is only for businessman? We’ll wait and see if lucky to get off from waitlist in April. Or, giveup to wait.

Has Anyone ever evaluated professors’ background, support and reputation/quality , possible rating ucsc ucm ucr sfsu sjsu csueb ?

Try Rate My Professor if available for all those campuses.

This week, We consider to choose one out of addmiited , that will get more chance to apply UC Graduate school in Y2021… CS Master degree.

You realize that a Masters in CS is not necessary to get a good paying job in the industry? My son is a CS major set to graduate next year and does not plan to go to Grad school until he has worked a few years. Working would better define in which subject subject area he would need a Masters to advance his career.
A Masters in Business Admin might be a better option depending upon his goals.

I know the high pay to CS students/graduated, 80k ~120k++ .
But Experiences from several ppl , once you work it’s hard to go back to campus to study! And, master degree will be helpful to career life no matter CS BS or CS BA, hired and promoted in top companies.

But who knows our children will go to graduate school or go to work 4 years later…
