Hi All!
I am currently studying in Stanford University in USA. I am an International Student and I dont like it here. I have my Family (Uncle,Aunt) in Canada. I visited Canada (Toronto) and I just loved it. I want to transfer to one of the top notch business schools in Canada but I have heard it is very intense and the chaces of getting in are very low if one is transferring.
I have a 3.83 GPA. 2100 in SAT. And a similar Secondary school record. Where should I apply for a business school? I have already applied into U of T Missisuaga Commerce Program and York Schulich Business School. UFT ST George Economics. What about Queens? Should I apply there too?
What will be my chances of transfer into each one of them? I have applied into Schulich and UTM because they are in Toronto and I want to be in or close to Toronto. Queens as I heard is closer too and plus its a top business School. How does everyone compare the 4 schools? What are my chances of getting into each one of them? How should I persue them? I applied into Rotman when I was in high school but my documents were misplaced and I did not get in. Although I sent all the documents. I was also accepted by Schulich then but so late that I had to accept Stanford’s offer.
I am really interested into going to Canada but I want to go into a top university of Canada too not just transfer from a university like Stanford to some ordinary school.
Best Regards
No school in Canada is comparable to Stanford. I suggest you talk to a counselor at Stanford to find out why you are willing to give up on one of the top universities in the world for UT Mississauga, a branch campus .
I am unable to adjust to the environment here. Plus since I am an International, the immigration and sponsorship prospects are very less. Do you think a degree in Economics would lend me a job with sponsorship in USA? Spending a lot of money makes me scare sometimes that it would be difficult to get the return on it in terms of a job.
When I think of going to Canada, I think of first studying there and then getting settled there. Otherwise I know Stanford is all time favorite of the world.
I can’t speak to your chances of admission as a transfer student because that information is rarely shared in enough detail by Canadian universities to be able to even guess. However, I would not recommend UTM, which is not only not in Toronto (it’s in Mississauga and really nowhere near downtown Toronto) but its reputation is not the same as it would be attending the St. George campus. Queen’s has an excellent commerce program but it is selective and it is nowhere near Toronto (about 150 miles away, almost equidistant from Toronto and Montreal). It is however, an excellent school with a beautiful campus in a relatively small city.
How about you apply to York and UT, NOT UT-M?.. and see where you get in?
I second the idea you should go meet with a counselor at Stanford to discuss your adjustment problems. Not to be “talked out” of your issues but rather to understand them better and discern whether it’s legitimate problems or temporary feelings.
Giving up Stanford would be difficult.
(DO NOT do it for UT-M, please )
However if the matter is that you’re paying full costs and it’s a burden on your family, then consider costs carefully for Canadian universities.
I agree that job prospects and speed of “naturalization” (ie., green card then citizenship) are much better in Canada, which is how Canada “poaches” international degree holders, especially at the BA/BS level, since odds are minuscule any of them would get anything but an OPT contract when in Canada you can get a “real” position.
However, keep in mind that there’s nowhere in Canada similar to the Silicon Valley and Stanford is not comparable to any university in Canada.
