Which choice is better for me? (want to transfer into Stony Brook for CS)

I am a recent graduate of Queensborough Community College (QCC). I am planning to attend Stony Brook University in the (hopefully, not too distant) future to study Computer Science. I have an unrelated A.A.S degree in nursing.

To prepare my application, I plan to take at least two semesters of calculus. I also plan to earn as many D.E.C. (required general education credits at SBU) credits as possible.

Since I have already graduated from QCC; I have two choices.

Either re-apply to QCC and graduate with another associates degree (liberal arts?) while taking D.E.C. equivalent courses and calculus, or transfer to a four year CUNY (most likely Queens College), and take calculus and D.E.C. equivalent courses there.

QCC does not offer an associates in Computer Science, Queens College offers a bachelors in Computer Science, however I am not sure it would be beneficial to apply and then leave after a couple semesters.

Which would be the better option (or is there no difference?) for acceptance into the Computer Science major at Stony Brook University?

Thank you for taking the time to read and respond to this.

Does CC work different in NY compared to CA?

Here we can take as many classes at CC as we want; no need for formal enrollment in a program (besides priority registration) or graduation. Just take the classes from your CC that articulate over as major pre-reqs at your transfer university.

I am transferring colleges without getting an associates degree.

Thanks for the reply.

I formally graduated so I am no longer considered enrolled at the CC. I am almost certain I need to apply again (as in apply and get accepted to an associates program) to enroll in any classes.

I could theoretically just apply to any major, and take the classes I need. It would still require 2 semesters and 1 summer/winter course at the least (because of class pre-reqs ie. Pre-cal -> calculus -> calculus 2). I could then apply to SBU and transfer out without finishing the new associates.

The only downside is I was thinking SBU admissions would look down on me leaving before completing a degree (I have one, but i will still leave with an incomplete one). If this doesn’t matter, it would sure save me from a crazy workload and time

Also, I wanted to boost my GPA a bit from the classes I take. I heard that after you receive an associates degree, if you take more classes it won’t affect the GPA. But if I start a new degree, would that affect my GPA?

Again, does CC work differently in NY compared to CA? Applying" to CC is a misnomer because CC automatically accept everyone. Once admitted you can choose what class you take. If you want to take classes to complete AA then you can do that. Or if you want to take classes that will transfer to another university (like me) you can do that too. And when you apply for transfer, they will combine all your transferable courses into the calculation. Unless CC is different in NY and everyone admitted has to be on some formal AA degree path I don’t see what the problem is.

Not sure if it works differently compared to CA. CC’s do accept anyone, what I meant was you have to technically choose a major (A.A or A.S) degree/ or a certification program.

After writing this I guess and reading your comment I guess it makes better sense to take the classes at my CC. I just looked at my transcript and remembered I took one summer class after graduating with my A.A.S in Nursing. It was a statistics class, and is listed under “Nursing Major / Liberal Arts Major”. The GPA for the class was added to my total GPA as well.

Thanks for the replies.
