After Associate in Computer Information Systems

Hi there,

After some deliberation, I have decided that the best way out for me to survive is going to an Community College and earn an Associate degree in Computer Information Systems. Now, I have some questions which I would like you all to answer.

I actually wanted to take admission in SUNY at Stony Brook. But, I have then revoked the idea due to the high fees for Out-state students (I am in India for 13 years). Is it possible to transfer my credits earned during the AAS towards BS in Computer Science at Stony Brook or other campuses?
Will I be considered in-state, since I have stayed for two years in New York by then?
Which community colleges should be good- the CUNY ones or the SUNY ones?
Is SAT required for entering community colleges or while transfering towards BS after AAS?
Are there rooms and boards options at community colleges? If yes, which is more economical- staying at college campus or staying on rent?
Is it possible to get a Computer Job after the AAS degree? (I can then support myself while completing BS.)
How much will it actually cost if I consider all costs (including boards and foods) and how much financial aid can I obtain?
My mother has a prejudice that Community Colleges are not good. Is that true? I am trying to make her understand that once I transfer the credits towards an University, it will be the University name by which I will be known.

I have asked a lot of questions because I know this website is a helpful one.(I have experienced it from the previous threads.)
Thanks in advance.

Good questions. My advice – if you want to transfer into a four-year program – is to NOT do an AAS program. Those aren’t designed as transfer degrees, and as such, most of your courses there won’t count. If you’re here in New York, your best bet to transfer into CS is to apply to Suffolk or Nassau Community College into our Joint Admissions program.
