Hi,
I have a situation with my senior year schedule where I can’t have the 2 math classes I want in opposite semesters (they are both only available 2nd semester). I’m having a hard time deciding which one I want to take, because I would rather not have two math courses in the same semester. The classes are Precalc and AP Statistics. I have already taken regular statistics, but I have a large interest in the subject and am planning to pursue it in college. But then again, I don’t think college would really like to see that I haven’t taken or plan to take precalc in highschool, especially as a mathematics related major. Virginia Tech is the school I want to go to, if that is a factor in this decision at all. So I’m asking for thoughts on the matter, which class do you think will help me with college apps and my college career in general?
Although VT only requires math up to algebra 2 what I think you will find is most applicants have pre calculus or even more. I would recommend pre-calculus over AP statistics as I believe it will make you a better applicant. (BTW I am a VT mom and it is a great school.)
Too bad there is a conflict, but I’d definitely go with precalc especially for a school like VTech
You need to finish pre-calc before college. If it was Calc vs Stats, that would be different, bit I think it’s super important you take pre-calc
Virginia Tech expects precalculus or calculus, unless your school doesn’t offer it and you have no other way (no virtual school, no dual enrollment).
I’d do Pre-Calculus.
I think colleges like it better, and check Virginia Tech’s math requirements. Maybe they’ll have something about classes you should have taken throughout high school. I’m not familiar with their admissions because I never applied there, but do some searching.
