I am an OOS student looking to major in nursing and possibly attend college in Florida. Which would be the best option?
I am a rising senior, have a 4.1 GPA, 1410 on new SAT, 2030 on old SAT, 30 ACT, and will have 11 AP courses completed by the end of high school.
I’m looking for a school with a good reputation where I could possibly get a scholarship.
(I am also open to other college recommendations. I am from NY)
What is wrong with the in-state nursing programs?
Another important factor to consider is whether the nursing program is direct admission or if you must compete for admission later after enrolling. Also, check on what requirements there are to stay in the nursing program.
Nothing’s wrong with in-state, I just prefer the Florida area where there’s more things to do. I’d rather have a direct admission program but it’s not a necessity.
Check out FAU too . . . they have a direct admit program: http://nursing.fau.edu/index.php?main=2&nav=952. You might be able to get an OOS scholarship. http://www.fau.edu/admissions/scholarship-os.php
FAU is a beautiful campus (Boca Raton is main campus) and an up-and-comer in Florida.
Usf also has a great nursing program but I do not think it is direct admissions. However, they have decently cheap out of state tuition.
Can your family afford to pay out of state tuition for Florida universities?
If your unweighted GPA >= 3.50, then it and your test scores will give you a full ride to Florida A&M if you apply early enough and the scholarship is the same as previous years:

However, Florida A&M only admits to pre-nursing; admission to nursing is competitive based on performance in pre-nursing college courses:

UF, at best, will offer $8K, $16K or $20K a year in tuition reduction, off of a $28K a year OOS tuition rate. The other in-state public schools will offer a much better deal.
For example:
With a 30 ACT score, FSU is likely to offer an OOS tuition waiver, bringing tuition down to the $6,500 a year in-state rate.
USF would offer the Green & Good Presidential Award $48,000 (up to $12,000 per year). OOS tuition is $17,324. That would bring tuition down to $5,324 a year.

The other Florida publics also offer OOS tuition waivers or/and merit scholarships. It’s worth looking into, while you’re looking into their nursing programs.
