I get Wellesley College and Wesleyan University messed up all the time. Which one is the all girls school?

Wellesley College (in MA) and Wesleyan College (in GA) are both women's colleges.

But Wesleyan University (in CT) is coed.

UPenn and Penn State.

Cornell College (in Iowa) and one of those Ivy schools.

It's got to be tough for the Cornell College folks, especially considering that they had the name first.

Wells
Lee

Harvard/Haverford
Washington University/University of Washington (Missouri vs. Washington)
University of Miami/Miami University (Florida vs. Ohio)
Illinois Institute of Technology vs. ITT Tech. Institute.

Any college or university or seminary with the word "Concordia" in it.

According to Wikipedia, the US and Canada collectively have:

9 "Concordia Universities";

3 "Concordia Colleges";

1 "Concordia University College"

Eight of the Universities and two of the Colleges form the "Concordia University System", but the others are unaffiliated. And then there are the seminaries, which include:

1 "Concordia Seminary";

1 "Concordia Lutheran Seminary";

1 "Concordia Theological Seminary";

1 "Concordia Lutheran Theological Seminary"

The Lutherans evidently have some kind of rule about school names.

1 "Concordia Seminary";

1 "Concordia Lutheran Seminary";

1 "Concordia Theological Seminary";

1 "Concordia Lutheran Theological Seminary"

that's pretty badass, I must say

Omg, yes, the Concordias!

UPenn and Penn State.

(UMass) Dartmouth
Cornell (College)
Ha(verfo)rd
Columbia (College)
Penn (State)
Princeton (Theological Seminary)
(George) Brown (College)

I vote for the Indiana University of Pennsylvania. It's neither Indiana University, nor is it the University of Pennsylvania.

It always irks me when people mistake BC for BU.

Indiana University of Pennsylvania is called that because it is in Indiana County, PA.

Well yes, tokyorevelation9, you know that and I know that. But how many regular people know that? How many regular people wouldn't confused IUP with IU or UP?

So which is more prestigious:

Indiana University of Pennsylvania ? or
California University of Pennsylvania ?

Well, as a born and raised ex-Pennsylvanian, I would have to say that among Pennsylvanians, most would tell you that IUP is generally more well known and desireable than CUP, although both are comparable 4th-Tier public institutions founded around about the same time in the mid-19th century.

Anyway, colleges that confuse me:

Trinity University (TX), Trinity University (DC), Trinity College (CT).

City University of Hong Kong vs Chinese University of Hong Kong from the initials (CUHK)
Teikyo Post University (I found out later why this was so)

Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) vs. Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)

San Diego State, San Jose State, San Quentin State.

I don't get how people could confuse Penn and Penn State. It seems like it would be pretty easy to figure out which is the state school. Then again, when I lived in Europe and professors found out I was from Michigan, they would often ask, "Which is the public university, Michigan or Michigan State?" It was tough explaining that both Michigan and Michigan State were public.
