I read about the 13th company getting to run the football to the Army-Navy game. Who gets to participate in the run? Does everyone in the company take a turn, or do only selected people run the football?

Any observations about the Color Company?

The last few posts sounded like a new thread to me!

Well it's not going to be 9th company. They just had an adjudication today and some 40+ midshipmen were "fried".

Other observations about color company:

I'm not sure who has it now, but 4th company always seems to have it or be close to the top.

18th company seems to do really well in academics.

5th, 10th, 27th, and 6th are often the bottom dwellers.

28th seems to always win the demerit championship (most demerits).

12th company wins the Lady Bing award (least demerits).

7th and 8th Companies are really good at drill (Thanks Maj. Beyer).

"Dirty 30" is just that.

23rd is supposedly has "the best of friends" in company.

1st Company excels in Plebe-Youngster company mate of the deck.

26th often falls into obscurity while 22nd loses the most mids.

13th is hardcore, no seriously they are.

Just some stuff that comes to mind.

I read a recent Trident article that said 17 won Color Company.

17th Company is the Fall 2007 color company.

A more artful way of phrasing the question is:

What company, other than the one you are in, would you have preferred to have been assigned? Why?

Do plebes get transferred to different companies at the end of plebe year?

Unless something has changed in the past year, plebes do not switch companies... They used to switch, but that ended in the spring of 04

I wish they still would shotgun plebes, it's a way to get away from any stigma that you created over plebe summer, either good or bad, and it gives you the chance to know more of your class.

I wouldn't mind being in 18.

I like Jack's proposal! Why isn't this done anymore? What's the practice at USMA and the other service academies; do 4th class change companies at the end of the first summer training?

At West Point the plebes generally stay in the same company as Beast, when the academic year starts. The exceptions are the corps squad (varsity) athletes that get moved to to other companies in order to balance them out throughout the corps. For my daughter's class (2009) they will remain in the same company all 4 years but that will inevitably change from year to year as it has in the past. She was in one company during Beast but was scrambled to another one because she was a cross country runner. She has remained in the same company since.

At USAFA the 4 digs stay in their squadrons for the first year . They are then all moved to new squadrons. Daughter likes the idea so she can get to know more cadets.!!!

5th Company, a bottom dweller? They have gotten 2nd place for Color Company for the past 3 semesters.

Clearly, there are valid arguments for and against remaining in the same company after plebe summer, but one issue is that the new plebes/cadets are such a diverse group. Incoming plebes/cadets run the gamut, 17 year-old high school grads from non-military families to 22 year-old combat veterans with Purple Hearts and Bronze Stars. At Navy I've observed a deliberate pairing-up of priors/NAPStrs with newbies in plebe summer company/roommate assignments. That makes sense. However, it also makes sense that plebes/cadets change companies at the beginning of the academic year because at that point everyone should be up to speed with the basic professional knowledge, and as others have mentioned, plebes would get to know a wider range of their classmates and any "plebe summer issues" would be water under the bridge. Comments?

asward, thanks for that! I knew 5th Company was up there but didn't want to post it without varification.

I imagine there are good arguments for both. I know that cheating scandals in the past were a major reason for reshuffling companies at West Point. Our D seems to like the fact she has been with the same company the whole way (except Beast) but if a cadet is looking for a fresh start, re-shuffling would be a good way to do it.

During Spring of plebe year, we were actually disappointed when we found out that they weren't shuffling our class. The reasons for our discontent ranged from wanting a "fresh" start to just plain wanting out of the company. There was this belief that our 2/c would still treat us like plebes after the summer, and that our performance grade would be based more on our perception as plebes....

All that being said, I'm happy we didn't switch. We got an amazing Senior Chief and LT at the end of that year, and there were no issues with the 2/c. Once theres brand new plebes running around, all thoughts of the fact that you used to be a plebe are completely lost. For the most part, as long as you stepped up as a youngster, you could easily shed any plebe year stigmas. For example, between 2nd semester plebe year and 1st semester youngster year there were people in my company whose performance ranking went up as much as 20 spots.

The major downside of being shotgunned is that you won't be able to build on the comraderie with the guys you went through plebe summer and plebe year with. I think shotgunning was used more as a type of punishment or to correct a problem than being a normal occurence. When it did happen, it was fairly rare

-Btw, for any one who doesn't know, shotgunning is different than "shuffling" (which is when plebe companies are moved en mass to a different company). Shotgunning is when plebes from the same company get shotgunned to companies all over the brigade.

I have to agree with itlstallion422. My best friends, were formed during Plebe Summer and Plebe year. Youngster year all of the preconceived notions of who was good and who was bad pretty much evaporated. I would have been very disappointed had we been Shotgunned. Shuffling would have been ok but I still would have missed the friendships and respect that I developed with the upper class during Plebe year. Those who I know who wanted to be shotgunned had big issues within our company. Did not have anything to do with meeting more people. I have met a ton of different people in class, EC's and through my friends.

Thanks for the clarification italstallion, I actually meant shuffling. Both you and currentmid made good points.
