is the best to get into? I know that I have no say in the matter, but it would still be nice to know which companies you want to get into and which ones you don't want to get into. Anyway, just wondering if any current mids have any say in the matter.

Honestly, it isn't even worth answering. The culture changes with class and time, just like it does when different COs assume commands. So while one might be "good" now, it might not be next year or in future years.

It all depends on the culture set by the company officer, SEL, and 1/C.

Class of 2010 seem to be more... flamers than 2009. but it really depends on your company. i'd say the best are 6, 18. 11, 19, 14, 30 are pretty good, i don't really know second reg though.
the training companies are 13, 21, 5.
I dunno. A lot of them are very in the middle.
Class of '08 and '09 have been pretty cool, but i heard '07 sucked and that's why '10 won't be good. i've seen a lot of youngster flamers. '11 is going to be super chill.

Woah, stop hatin' on 2010 dude! '07 had a good ride through here under Adm Rempt and many people argue that '08 is bitter since they've gotten the short end of the stick compared to '07. That doesn't mean that '07 sucked though, and consequently that 2010 is bad either...sorry about your experiences with my flaming classmates, youngsters shouldn't be flaming.

Oh and No Fun 21 really isn't that bad. 21 is legit. Trust me.

I really want to be in 22nd. Those guys are pretty dang awesome. My NASS squadleader is in 22nd. I've got a good friend in 21st and they are really cool too.

Is there any way to influence your company placement? Maybe if there are 1/c that say "We want this kid."?

Nope. There is no way to influence your company placement unless you have a very good friend in admissions, and even then you still can't influence...in the end it really doesn't matter which Co. you get into; there are pros and cons to each: location, leadership, people, deck, etc...you will be happiest in whichever company you are placed into.

OK thanks fiterace.

I'll just be happy to be there.

I agree that across the brigade, people seem to note the edge that 2010 has...In my company, the firsties, who are flamers are constantly talking about how good the youngsters are and how they are always out at chow calls, etc while 2009 only had one person go up for training sgt. this semester in my company, and 12 people went up for training corporal. it shows that 2010 does have a different culture than 2009. Let me give you the run down from what I've seen.

This year, the cool companies are:

6, 30, 18, 9, 27, 4, 7....

The ones who are hardcore this year:

5, 13, 21, 19, 10, 12....

Next year, there are gonna be some crazy 2/c traininers that I know. Dread your plebe year if you end up in any of these companies:

5, 10, 7, 4, 11, 16... 4th and 7th are going to be BRUTAL next year.

I've tried to be a "cool" youngster this year, but I've had to stop myself too many times when I see an infraction and not come off as a flamer. i don't know if I'll be able to hold back next year...Some of my classmates say that I'm going to be hell, but I know about 3 others in my class who are going to be relentless. If you end up in 7, things are going to be hell. If you end up in 4, you might just want to pack your bags before the AC year starts. One kid made people cry at summer seminar.

'11 is going to be super chill

You say that now... just wait though. If your a NASS cadre you'll get the first taste of youngsters on a power trip.

but i heard '07 sucked and that's why '10 won't be good.

In what way? If your equating "sucking" with being flamers, then I put the blame, if you can even call it that, for 2010 flaming on '08. Thats who trained them. '09 was trained by '07... This also brings up an entirely different issue about whether training is necessarily a bad thing. I think Fiterace would concur that I wasn't exactly the most intense of people, however, I do believe that there is a right and wrong way to train, and that sometimes it may be necessary to drop the hammer.

Ditto on itlstallion.

As alumni have made an extraordinary effort to point out the benefits of having a "tough" plebe year, to what extent does having a hardcore training staff (and 2/C) help in the development process?

In plebe summer, we had a real tough squad leader. He earned our PS company unit award for 1st set. Llife was very hard for us and we were being drilled on rates, writing books of rates, constant yelling and screaming. In looking back on plebe summer, I owe a lot of gratitude to this (now) 1stLt, who pushed all of us to our limits and beyond. Not only was this guy my PS squad leader, but also my 1/C mentor during plebe year.

In my plebe year, we had an extremely TOUGH training sergeant (almost on the same level of PS minus the constant yelling)....I swear to this day we all wanted to kill this guy. Thankfully, he turned out to be a great person after Herndon. This is another person I am thankful for being able to know.

So is there any truth to the constant talk of how each year gets easier? Or is that just kinda like traditional joking?

In the end I think you have to ask yourself why you came here if your goal is to have an easy year and skate by? Isn't the point of plebe year to be at least moderately challenging? While plebes may complain about having a tough training staff now, if they take the system for what it's worth then they will benefit more than the people who had a "chill" training staff who don't care. Ditto with what jadler and stallion said above.

Like I said above, it doesn't matter what company you fall into. If you end up in a tough company then you'll learn to deal with it and move on. If you end up in an easy company then great, you get to relax a little. Big deal. While most people might secretly wish they end up in an easy company, where is the sense of pride when you finish plebe year that wasn't really what "plebe year" should be? Just playing devil's advocate...

I agree with your insights, fiterace, I would be dissapointed if the Academy was lowering its standards or toughness. Personally I want to get into a tough company, of course I have no say, but that would be my choice. I understand that it will be hard, but I didn't apply to the Academy because I thought it would be easy. As far as I see it, the tougher the company the greater I am pushed...though some would probablly say I haven't experienced it yet so I don't know what I'm talking about :)

Well, at the time you will probably hate it because you see your classmates in "easy" companies get away with things that you can't. But the same applies with everything. Some people get easy teachers and others don't. Really it's luck of the draw, and everyone will have some challenging obstacle. But you have a good attitude in that you aren't coming here to skate by. That's what will really matter in the end, IMO.

GoNavyXC, I totally agree with you about the Youngsters. I see it in my company with my youngsters, I can tell they really want to break loose and tell us off, but they still flame kind of. I know that 2012 in my company will have it harder than we do, but 2013 will have it about the same as us.
And about the sense of accomplishment of finishing the year in a hard company, I dunno. I'm glad I got to have a pretty good time and didn't have a hard year. My friends in harder companies say they hate it constantly, but they like to know they had a real plebe year, personally I don't care. And I'm in one of the easiest companies that we listed. I enjoy it. You mindset pretty much depends on where you end up.

18 is best. 2010's pretty high ranking ie grades etc...

and my son and his buddies are cool!

I'm in 13, and yes, 13 does like to train, lol. But it's not always as simple as which company would be easiest as a plebe. For instance, my company is one of the tougher companies to be in as a plebe, but there are good parts of it. Some companies that don't train at all are more inclined to not like each other, because they didnt go through anything together, so they are more likely to fry one another in later years. All in all, plebe year will pretty much suck no matter what company you get in, it might vary greatly, but the routine of chopping around (except for some 2nd reg. companies who don't even do that) and sounding off and all that other bullcrap will happen, you just do the best you can to get through it.

Of course bear in mind that this is coming from someone who hasnt yet climbed herndon, hehe..........(and with the way things are looking, might never climb it.)

LOL what a stupid thread. First you don't get to choose so discussing the perceived reputation is pointless. Second, JT it's your perception, not necessarily mine or my classmates so dishing on a public forum will not get you far. More so claiming that 07 sucked is just your take, personally, I have a lot of friends in and respect the Class of 2007. They trained me and quite frankly did a heck of a job. Just because you may have been flamed by a youngster does not make the entire class flamers. JT, please check your attitude at the gate.

Well said... Personally I have an amazing amount of pride in my class, and I'm not quite sure I appreciate when someone who wasn't even there to see any of us comments on the entire class in a public forum... and From a plebe at that. I hope your not a reflection of either your class or the type of training that '09 does.

discussing companies' reputations is SUCH a shot in the dark. you can't ever say "ohh, 15 18 29 and 2 are going to be easy next year" because you honestly have NO idea how the 2/c are going to be. most 2/C don't know how they're going to be until they find themselves in an actual training situation. I'm in 5, and I can honestly say, while it may not be the easiest company it IS one of the best (or i'd say THE best.) the trainers are not always the people you'd think they'll be. that being said, i'm a squad leader for first set plebe summer so anyone who finds themself in charlie company 5th platoon should be ready! lol
