Which Dorm would be Right for me?

Hey guys, I'm having a hard time choosing which dorm would be right for me at Binghamton.

First off, do we get to choose or at least get to send in our top choices?

I know the basics such as Mountainview has suites, CIW is traditional and circular, Newing has a new building and stuff.

I'm looking for a dorm which isn't too crazy and druggy, I like to keep a set schedule. But I don't mind partying every weekend, I love partying I'm just worried my focus would be diverted from academics. But I don't wanna be around a bunch of study crazies who close in their rooms and study 24/7. I would like a nice social life in the dorms with partying but nothing too crazy or druggy.

I also want a double or a triple. I heard the suites are nice, but I dont' want to try the suites until like sophomore or junior year.

so which dorm would you recommend to me? thanks :)

Wherever you go, it’s not like there’s only one kind of people. You’re going to have studious, partying and genuine people all over. Some things you may want to take into consideration, however, is where you’re classes are located (in terms of walking time). If you’re in Fine Arts alot, Dickinson is very close. Lecture Hall- Hinman, Mountainview.
The rest are scattered around.

If you want brand new, go for Newing. There’s a bunch of new buildings I expect will be open for next year, and they’re gorgeous. I know that there are definately doubles there.

lemme break it down for you

CIW: very homely kind of feel with absolutely ****ty aesthetics. if you’re more of a social person you’ll find this nice though, particularly if you’re a sophomore lookin to score some weed.
Mountainview: oh this place is amazing, absolutely. The dining hall is beautiful and the the crevace in which people play sports in adds to the aesthetics of the entirety of this community. Rooms are nice and big also. only con, its a frikkin hike down to the main area.
Hinman: Azns and thai food.
Dickinson: more like CIW, just more spread out, don’t know too much about it.
Newing: o god there’s an amazing view and amazing rooms and amazing lounges with amazing sofas and amazing almost private showers… i think theres one part of newing that’s old nd shtty though…

I would say CIW for you (the drug reputation is ridiculously exaggerated, so don’t worry about that). I’ve lived there for two years and it’s a good balance of studiousness and social-ness. As for getting in a suite, most likely as a freshman you won’t be assigned to one so you can have the experience in the corridor rooms. If you’re assigned a designed triple, its huge. The doubles are also pretty large. Yes, the buildings are pretty old, but its not that bad. And I kind of like the architecture XD. It reminds me of all my schools (they had the same 70s look)

despite the fact that new students stress about this every year, the truth is most people end up being happy wherever they end up. rooms for freshmen are reserved in every dorm so there will be new people wherever you end up.

also dorm reputations may well change. newing has had a certain reputation for a long time, but as of next fall, all the newing dorms will be new – i bet a lot of kids who previously wouldn’t have requested newing because of its reputation will rank it their top choice.

Mountain is the best far as i know. One year ago, i was like you that worring about the same thing. However, I came here and found out Mountainview was the best community at Bing. I’ve been living Windham(breaking housing) for a semester, and I loved it.

thanks all! you guys have been extremely helpful, I’m not the least bit worried now
btw what is break housing?

break housing means the dorm remains open over school breaks when students normally have to leave the dorms.

ohh is that what it was??? Ok i need to sign up for break housing then… haha thanks for the info! I needed that since I’m international and would need a place to stay during winter/spring break. Could you tell me how to sign up for those?

here is the link to the residential life site – [Binghamton University - Residential Life](http://reslife.binghamton.edu/)
if you can’t find the info there you should at least be able to find contact info as to who to contact with your questions.

Thanks! I read about break housing there but it says that it isn’t easy getting a spot in break housing since there are limited spots? how easy was it for you?

Go with mountainview. You get a nice big suite and the rooms are pretty spacious. The dining hall is clean and never too crowded. The “hike” is worth it and if you are really that lazy you can take the bus up there.
CIW is ok. Mohawk is like mountainview except in a more convenient location. Only problem is that its break housing so unless you are an athlete or an international student you won’t get to live there. Frankly, the other buildings in CIW are overrated. Like others have said, if you are a freshman you most likely won’t get a suite so you get a corridor room. And since the New Newing is going to be open next year, you have no need to live in CIW if you are into the corridor thing.
Dickinson is old and asbestos-y. Same with Hinman except it’s really small suites.
In the end a lot of it depends on luck. Sure, your gonna have greek life in newing or nerds in hinman but you shouldn’t let those stereotypes influence your decision at all. You can get a crazy roommate and a horrible anti social floor anywhere.
