Hi, I've written two essays for the Common App - one that shows my personality (about my love for music and playing guitar), and one that shows an impressive achievement (about me starting a business at 14).

The music one has more energy, but is less impressive. In fact, since music is so ubiquitous these days, it may even be a little unimpressive. The business one is more impressive and reveals certain things about me (independence, initiative etc.), but it doesn't have a strong personal voice.

I know it's impossible to advise without reading the essays, but as a general rule is it better for essays to have "substance" or "personality"?

Thanks!
