Which gives you a bigger boost- being a legacy or a first generation college student?

Which do colleges/ admissions officers like more?

For private schools: Legacy.

@ many schools, there is no boost for either.

But why do you ask? You can only be one or the other.

In general this is true, but take it with a grain of salt. There are a select amount of schools that don’t consider legacy at all, and others that may not value legacy as much as we think.

For a specific school, take a look at its common data set or its entry on [CollegeData: College Search, Financial Aid, College Application, College Scholarship, Student Loan, FAFSA Info, Common Application](http://www.collegedata.com) to find out whether these factors are considered.

legacy probably

I don’t get the point of legacy…Why is a legacy special in any way?

^ An alum of a college is more likely to give money to the school if legacy is considered in admissions (for the children).
