I recently was accepted into UIUC's engineering program and am looking forward to attending next fall. I have read a lot about housing options at UIUC, but am still having a difficult time deciding which option is the best.

Which housing option would you recommend? I like going out, but I don't want it to be too crazy. My largest concern is that it's relatively clean and modern.

I would recommend the housing closest to the E-quad. Some dorms are so far away, you need to take a bus to get to class.

As for when to apply for housing, I believe the housing deposit is refundable and that you can send your deposit in to hold your place even before you accept. They have been known to run out of housing and put people up in lounges for months.

Most freshman classes are on the main quad, except physics and a few others. The key when you’re selecting your schedule at summer registration is to have a campus map handy. Regardless of where your housing is, bus service is clean and plentiful. Getting to your first class isn’t the issue. Getting from your first class on the South Quad to your second class in DCL in ten minutes is, on the other hand, a big issue, and most likely is an impossibility without risking life and/or limbs.

ISR- Illinois Street Residence Hall
-Closet to the engineering quad
-Most upperclassman, lots of engineers
Some say it’s no very social

Everything here is true. It’s pretty close to the quad, it’s not very social, there’s still a lot of minorities, but not as many as FAR/PAR. This would be your second to last choice, right in front of FARPAR.

The Six Pack- Synder, Scott,Weston,Hopkins, Garner and Forbes
Mostly freshman
Very Social
Known As the party dorms

Live here. It’s only a party dorm if you want to party. You’ll make friends and love life.

FAR/PAR- Flordia Avenue Residence Hall(Has air conditioning), Pennsylvania Avenue Residence Halls
-Far from engineering quad
Lots of minorities
Good food

Do. Not. Live. Here. Food still sucks. It’s a 20-25 minute walk or a bus ride to any of your classes. It’s 90% international/African american. There is no social life.
