Which is better: UMich or Northwestern?

“I presume because it unequivocally proved him and rjkofnovi (aka the world’s biggest ■■■■■ and the one who single handedly cause me to cross Michigan and Berkeley off my college list) wrong.”

I got a personal thank you note from the heads of both alumni associations when they found out you decided not to apply because of me.

Hahahahaha

@liv4physicz

I’m no expert at the EFC and financial aid topic because my parents make too much for me to qualify for aid (but they are still paying ful tuition.) I think that if your dad is adament about not paying Northwestern’s tuition and you don’t have any merit/need based aid then you don’t have much choice. However if your dad is willing to put your best interests first and pay for Northwestern you will likely see a payoff in grad/med/law school placement and in getting a job.

It really depends on whether your family will have to undergo hardship to pay your tuition; if they can continue to live comfortably while shelling out 50k a year and they don’t mind paying than pick Northwestern. Otherwise pick Michigan.

If money wasn’t an issue, I’d pick NU over UM solely for the campus.

You notice the people who bad mouth Michigan the most aren’t from Northwestern, even though this thread is about the two universities, but are instead from coastal schools liz? NU and Michigan supporters are much more respectful of each other and realize the overall quality of the schools are pretty equal.

He’s not exactly adamant, but I’d kinda feel guilty making him pay that much if the two schools are really that close in prestige. Plus, it’s gotta finance my twin sister’s college education at the same time (although she will likely end up at a public U)

Really? That’s why they both spammed me with mail begging me to apply? I honestly had a pretty good impression of the two schools until I started reading the crap you guys are spewing about it on CC.

What I think is strange is that all the Michigan students I meet/know in real life are fairly genial and intelligent yet all the ones on CC like to speak in hyperboles (i.e. “Michigan is basically like Harvard, there’s no difference really. I’m not biased at all!” and the like.)

*liv. And ah, nice observation there. I neglected to notice. And Calvin, absolutely agreed!

Correct me if I’m wrong but I think that they take sibling tuition into account when calculating EFC.

Liv, as I said before, if you can go to NU for about the same money as Michigan, I would recommend it to you simply because you want to try another area to live in and becasue it’s a great school of course. If the differences in costs are great, I wouldn’t recommend spending tens of thousands more to attend one over the other. Btw, I have a relative going to Northwestern starting in the fall of 2012. Soccer scholarship that pays 75% of her tuition and fees. That was a no brainer!

Liv4, ignore the noise. Get accepted and like tensighs says, “follow the money (financial aid)”. The decision will likely become a lot clearer when the offers come in.

You don’t want to jeopardize anything to be honest, especially under these economic conditions. You really won’t miss out on standards of education if you choose UMichigan over Northwestern. You might also consider going to UMichigan and double major with business. You can work hard and do well, and ask your parents to use that money they saved from not sending you to Northwestern for your graduate studies.

Does NU really give you much better future opportunities (grad school, jobs) than U-M?

I don’t badmouth UMich. I badmouth people like you. UMich is a good school it is just not a “peer” of Northwestern. It is a tier or two down as evidenced by pretty much every relevant statistic out there.

My school sent 6 kids to UMich last year (7 applied.) My school hasn’t sent anyone to NU for 3 years (around 30 have applied.) Granted my school sucks… but still.

From what I know and hear, the GPA you earn from said school outweighs which school you attended. Especially for schools with close-ranking programs such as NU/UM.

Liv4, no…

“Really? That’s why they both spammed me with mail begging me to apply? I honestly had a pretty good impression of the two schools until I started reading the crap you guys are spewing about it on CC.”

I did not realize that Michigan sent spam. I thought it was against university policy to do so.

“What I think is strange is that all the Michigan students I meet/know in real life are fairly genial and intelligent yet all the ones on CC like to speak in hyperboles (i.e. “Michigan is basically like Harvard, there’s no difference really. I’m not biased at all!” and the like.)”

I am sure students and alums at other proud universities would take insults sitting down. Perhaps if you were more civil (and informed) in your discourse, you would not find your object’s response quite as unpalatable.

@Alexandre

I like how you neglected to comment on deleting my earlier posts for no apparent reason…

I am not naive enough to call Duke the peer of HYPSM just as the vast majority of academia does not consider UMich a peer of Northwestern (for undergrad), it is fairly close behind, granted, but “peer” - no.

A bit- not that much though. It boils down to how enterprising a student is. However a less enterprising student might have better opportunities coming from NW. Get it- all things being equal (which really never happens anyways) NW would trump UMich.

Yeah, about that…MIT has been sending me all this stuff, but I don’t think that means they’re begging me to apply
