Which is better, UNC-Chapel Hill or Virginia commonwealth University

okay, so i'm stuck. i like both vcu and unc-ch but i don't know which to choose. i am thinking of doing something in the medical field like getting a BSN or doing pre-med, but if i change my mind i am going to major in accounting (i am iffy on all of those majors too, i don't know which one is best). i have a GPA above 3.75 in high school too. i just want to go to a school with a great college experience and have fun. i like diversity in schools though.

UNC-CH is the more prestigious university, is more difficult to get into, and will probably leave you overall with better opportunities. But if you receive merit at VCU it’s not at all a bad idea at all to go there instead.

UNC is much more selective especially if you are OOS. I don’t know if they give a lot of merit aid to OOS. VCU is OK and is very easy to get merit from them (high SAT and GPA). The amount is posted on their website with the averge GPA/SAT scores so if you are in the range you’ll probably get something. The only thing is that their merit scholarships require a higher GPA to keep the scholarship. I think it was either 3.25 or 3.50 which I thought was way higher than most other schools (usually they require a 3.0 to renew the scholarship).

For pre-med VCU can be really good. Not a ton to say for the location though. UNC-CH would probably provide better opportunity were you to switch majors. Are you in-state for either of them? Money could make all the difference.

I live in Virginia

So you will have to pay OOS tuition for UNC plus it will be extremely competitive since I think they have a quota of how many in-state vs. OOS they can accept (similar to UVA). Are you counting on FA from UNC or can you pay full freight for it?

VCU’s location is lousy but their guaranteed medical program is great! They gave my child a full tuition scholarship but he was not enthralled with the school. He couldn’t imagine himself at the school but you might find it to your liking. Have you visited both schools? Are you applying to UVA?

Virginia has some great schools to choose from and the in-state tuition is nothing to sneeze at  Apply to both schools and see what happens.

i was planning on getting FA or maybe even a scholarship to UNC. the thing is i wouldn’t mind going in-state because of money this point in time, but i really just want to go to an out of state college. I will apply to both colleges tho and UVA also.

OOS cost for UNC is about $36,000 a year. They claim to meet 100% need which is about 65% grants and 35% loans so you can figure out how much you will have to borrow. Their scholarships are very competitive (not only high scores but some very nice EC’s). I understand why you would want to go OOS but apply to the schools and crunch your numbers when the FA/scholarships come in. Good luck!

UNC-CH is exceedingly difficult to get into out of state.

UNC-CH is the better school by far, but as others have said its pretty tough if your are an OOS student. Good luck.
