Which Major is Best for a Prospective Quant?

I'm interested in going into quantitative finance and I'll be starting college next fall. Which of these majors would be best if I'm looking to do summer internships in quant finance?

Applied Math

Operations Research

Finance (general)

Economics (with lots of math courses)

It’d be hard to go wrong with any of those.

Consider taking course loads including aspects of Statistics and Computer Science as well. Don’t be afraid to take on a minor or two.

I thought that finance wasn’t “quantitative” enough for financial engineering or S&T.

depends on the curriculum.

Generally speaking, WHERE you go affects your opportunities in “high” finance more than what you major in.

If you’re a finance major at Wharton, you’re fine.

My ED choice is Carnegie Mellon. For my other schools, like Johns Hopkins, Georgetown, NYU, I’m trying to choose between applying for math or finance.

I’ll fall back on the premise that your Uni and your work experience matter most and from there your GPA matters more than your major so long as your major is “close enough”

Math with an emphasis on Economics
Quantitative Finance
Actuarial Science

They’re all close enough. A rose by any other name is still a rose.

If you’re worried about being quantitative enough, just minor in math or statistics(whichever is easier for you) and you’ll be fine.
