I am a transfer student and so the option of applying undeclared does not apply to me :(

I realize both sociology and media studies are very competitive to get into since they are majorly impacted. Still, I'm crazy and intend on being a sociology or media studies major. I just can't decide which one to be so I was hoping that knowing which major is more impacted would help me make a decision, as silly as that sounds.

I love the fact that I can take so many different classes as a media studies major, but I'm not a huge fan of journalism and the journalism courses put me off. Maybe it's not such a good idea to be a media studies major if I don't like the media much....

Straight up, I love sociology and so I'm leaning slightly towards it as my major.

Also, this is just fishing for a "chance me" post, but I was wondering if my 4.0 GPA is enough to get me in as a sociology major. I was reading in a thread the stats of people applying as a media studies major. They had numerous internships, worked 5 minumum wage jobs, saved the rainforest, and all managed to keep above a 3.8 GPA.

Then here I am, in small town California where businesses are nonexistent. It's too far away to intern and all of the minimum wage jobs are filled up due to so many people being laid off. The only thing I could do was devote my time as a library assistant, telling stories to and tutoring underprivileged children. It's no innercity, but it's rewarding. Still, I feel awfully inferior to the future corporate executives of America I will be competing against.

So any reassurance, advice, or answer to the initial question would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Wow, your dilemma sounds very similar to mine except a little different. First, I’m not a transfer student, but I’m a second year who was at first trying to go for Haas. I still ended up applying there, but knowing that I might not get in, I picked a backup major, which was Media Studies. However, that is capped as well, so I needed another backup major for it as well, so I ended up deciding with Sociology. Sociology is not capped like anon5524485 said, so it should be easier to get into the major.

Pick the major that interests you more. For the whole journalism part of Media Studies, you’re not required to take any journalism-based classes, except for the newly-required Media Studies 103 I believe (taught by Goldstein). For your electives, you can choose courses that are for Sociology, Business, Anthropology, Psychology, or whatever suits your interests, so you’re not bound to journalism courses for the major. One thing you can consider (& is something that I’m considering as well) is double majoring in both. They are majors that are related to one another and if you are compelled to do so, you might want to consider doing that. Also, some classes do overlap between the majors, so you won’t be taking an extensive number of courses to get both majors.

Hope this helps, and good luck figuring out which major you’ll end up choosing (because I’m still trying to figure that out too myself haha).

Dilemma:
[quote]
A dilemma (Greek δί-λημμα "double proposition") is a problem offering at least two solutions or possibilities, of which none are practically acceptable; one in this position has been traditionally described as being impaled on the horns of a dilemma, neither horn being comfortable.

I wouldn't be concerned about the majors..just ask for some blessings for getting into berkeley!

I was admitted into Cal as a Media Studies major. I went orientation and realized how much of a ****ing joke the major is. If you're interested in comm, go to UCLA. The name change bothered me enough, but when I found out how 'capped' the major is with sorority girls who want to be the weather girl, I opted for Political Science. It was definitely a good decision. PoliSci at Berkeley is legit. So, I'd go for Sociology if I were you. & of course, you could double major, which is what a lot of Media Studies majors do here because who wants a BA from Berkeley that says Media Studies & Media Studies alone.
