Which major should I consider if I want to be in the field of Public Relation?

Which major should I consider if I want to be in the field of Public Relation?
i especially am interested in doing fashion public relation.....
thanks!!
and any schools suggested:)?

English for sure. may want to consider marketing as well

Some schools offer a Public Relations major - I know that the University of South Carolina does. It is in the School of Journalism and Mass Communications.

Don't major in public relations. I agree with marylandmike09. I work in PR and none of my colleagues majored in PR, they come from a variety of disciplines ranging from French to Philosophy. The most important thing you will want to do is beef up your writing, perhaps on the school paper or a blog, and get a good internship.

I also work in PR (20 years). When we hire new employees we like to find the following majors (in order of preference):

Journalism
Mass Comm
Marketing
English

Yes, we have hired outside these four. But only because we were desparate or were told to find a job for an exec's daughter. She was an art history major, and an awful employee. We once hired a Philosophy major who was too judgemental and combative to be worth it. Will NEVER make that mistake again.

My degree is in Mass Comm with a PR concentration. If I had it to do over again, I'd major in Marketing with a Mass Comm minor. More job opportunities that way.

is majoring in general business or international business also good enough?
because i wanted to major in marketing but my parents think i should do marketing in grad school...cz marketing in undergrad woudl be too narrow. what do you think?

A general business degree won't let you stand out in a big fat pile of resumes. International business would be even less relevant in the PR field (unless you're applying to an international organization). I stand by my recommendations in the prior post.

If you want to go to grad school, you could make quite a nice PR niche for yourself with an MBA or law degree on top of a Marketing or Communications bachelor's.

Marketing is NOT a narrow field. It leads to many jobs.

okay..but usually ppl still need to go to grad schools right?
i hv a feelin that if i dn't go to grad schools, it's hard to get a well-paid job :S

by the way, i'm more interested in fashion PR, which i assume is quite different from other PRs?

kawaiigurl, if you're interested in fashion pr, i advise you to attend one of many schools in a fashion city, ie NYC or LA. I tell you this because it's easy to find internships while you're in school to pursue fashion pr. You can even find them on CL. As long as you have an interest and willing to show commitment you honestly dont need the education to get a job in fashion pr. After you have a couple of internships under your belt, and expereince a lot of you getting a job will be based on your experience. The fashion industry is notorius for low wages, so its not worth it to go to school get 100K in debt hoping to have a decent salary just because you majored in public relations, realistically speaking a fashion pr job will most likely pay you 20K-30K, and when you're trying to live in LA and NY, 20K-30k does not go a long way.

Study something that you enjoy learning about, and just actively pursue the work experience outside of school, even if it's working in retail clothing store. That expereince within itself will teach you how to deal with many personalities, and any fashion pr firm will value that.

FYI a good option may be USC, in Los Angeles, the connections the school has, and also the fact that they actually have a Public Relations major will help you out. They also offer good financial aid to needy students, unlike NYU which would dont. I just dont think it's necessary at all, to major in PR, just to do PR.

thanks a lot (:
may i ask wut "CL" is though?
and...except for NY and LA, are there some others places that are more fashion-related?:S thanks =]

craigslist, like even if you browse through the job section of losangeles.craigslist.org and type in fashion in the search field, youll see pr internships/jobs

other places that are more fashion related, honestly not as big as ny and la, but any major city boston, chicago miami etc is bound to offer some opportunities, not as great though.

Umm, before I answer, I need to know what you think PR is.

How about a double major in Psych, and Media Studies (which is a division of an English department)? Would that work?

Chedva, it's difficult to answer your question because different hiring managers are looking for different things. And it also depends on what you want to do: PR agency/Higher ed and non-profit/corporate communications/etc. Within each of those groups there are very specific niches as well: crisis communications, internal communications, media relations, etc. etc. In my opinion, your ability to write and your internships are what will set you apart from other candidates, not you major.
