Which of these schools is better?

My top choice is University of Washington. In case I don't get in, I'm also applying to DePaul University and University of Pittsburgh. I am an international student. In case I don't get into any of these universities, I will stay in my country (I'm international)
Which university is more prestigious and better in terms of education? DePaul or Upitt? I'd be pursuing a business major. DePaul is ranked 60th in businessweek, whereas Upitt is ranked 88th. However, in usnews' ranking, DePaul is ranked 121st(!!!) in the country and Upitt is 62nd. I know rankings aren't everything, but they are something. Which ranking is more relevant?
Which one would you choose and why?
Right now I'm leaning towards DePaul because it is in downtown Chicago, and I love Chicago. Upitt is in Pittsburgh, near downtown, but it isn't as vibrant as Chicago, and I would want to go to a big city for college. However, if the difference in prestige and education is big, I would go to University of Pittsburgh. What do you think?
Thank you

This might not be very helpful advice, so feel free to discard it, but it’s kind of a silly, not-really-college-related factor that would personally impact my decision if I were in your shoes. Are you ready to root on the Cubs or the Pirates? The Blackhawks or the Penguins? Da Bears or the Steelers? Both of these cities love their sports teams.

That probably wasn’t very helpful-especially for an international student-but I hope it was at least a somewhat amusing thought :p

Pitt is typical viewed as a more prestigious university overall for what that is worth.

I think the decision should be based off of the cost and really which urban environment you prefer. I have visited Pitt during an accepted students day and really liked the town on Oakland where the main campus is located with only a five minute bus ride to the heart of Pittsburgh. I have never personally been to Chicago before so I cannot really comment on the environment there.

Keep in mind the diversity of both schools and presence of international students. Since both are in large urban areas neither should be a problem.

Also keep in mind that if you decide against Business once you take a few classes, which school do you believe would give you the best all around education if you decide to switch majors. MANY MANy MANY people do switch majors in college, sometimes even more than once.

Well most people in the states have heard of Pitt and have never heard of DePaul, so I would say Pitt. Pitt is well respected in the east and well known throughout the nation.

betweenthetreees: lots of people have heard of Pitt and fewer have heard of Amherst and… ??
Most people in the US have heard of universities because of their sports program or because they live roughly within 200 miles of it… no relation to actual “elite status”, quality of academics, grad school/job placement.

DePaul is well-known as the largest Catholic university in the US. It’s a good regional university.
Pitt is well-known, less selective than Penn State Main Campus but more so than Temple. It’s probably got a broader reach and reputation in the East, especially the MidAtlantic region (NY State, PA, Maryland, and up to Ohio no problem).

Which one will cost you less?

Have you applied to both already? Received admission?

I went to DePaul for my MBA and MS, and I can tell you the school is very strong in business and computer science. Both programs are taught by professors who work in the industry and are very up to date on new concepts. DePaul is located in one of the nicest neighborhoods in Chicago and you will get lots of connections in local businesses since there are so many alumni in the area. If you think you might want to stay in Chicago for work or grad school, you will find a job easily. There are many international students and the school is highly diverse.
