My son took SAT II Math-2 and Physics in May and scored both 800. He is planning to take chemistry tomorrow. I wonder if it is necessary to take it? Which would be better, having just math and physics, or having math, physics and a less-than-800 chemistry score?

Thanks.

Most schools only require two scores. However, having an extra SAT II score can only help him. He always has the option of not sending that score to schools that don’t require a third score.

But some colleges require that you report the results of all SAT and SAT Subject Tests or all ACT tests that you have taken. So,say 800/800, or 800/800/~760, which one is better?

Some colleges also require three subject tests. Really, it can’t hurt to have a 760 if you have two other 800s. He could also retake the subject test in the fall if he’s really displeased with his score.

For schools that require 2 subject tests, they will look at the 2 highest scores unless they have special preference on subjects. Even for schools that requires/recommends only 2 subject tests, many would like to see more scores. For instance, Harvard has decreased the number of subject test requirement from 3 to 2, and yet, they would like to see more scores.

If you are applying to a lottery school, then more scores above 750 are better. Below 750 is probably worse. Therefore, 800/800/760>800/800 but 800/800/700 < 800/800.
It’s not the 800 that matters so much as the ability to show that you can do a high level of work across many subject areas.

Thank you guys for the reply. He took the chemistry today. I will post the score later.

He got 800 on Chemistry. Very happy.

Congrats! I, too, have an 800 in Chem, Math II, and Physics.
