Which one is Organic Chem??

Hey..

I'm trying to make my schedule...and I can't figure out which class is Organic Chem...like...which one I would take for to fulfill med school requirements.

I see CHEM 357-358 Organic Chemistry for the Life Sciences. But it's only 3 credits...and I don't see a lab or anything with it. Would this be the one I take..?

Is that what I'd take..?

I also want to take Elementary Japanese (JAPAN 101-102) and it says "6 credits each semester" is the whole sequence, Elem. Japanese 1 and 2, really 12 credits?

Thanks in advance.

Majority of pre-meds take 3570-3580, there is also an honor sequence, but take honors only if you LOVE chemistry. There is a seperate 2 credit lab course that you need to take to fulfill the 8 credit Orgo requirment. It's called CHEM 2510.

The class meets for like 9 hours a week. Do you really want to spend that much time on Japanese?

Are you serious...?

Is that like..the only Japanese language course? I do want to learn japanese...

Dude, there's 2 50-minute lectures that meet twice a week EACH and 1 50-minute section that meets 5 days a week. Take Japanese at a CC on your own time. Japanese and premed don't go well together.

My first semester, I've decided, will be:

Japan 101 - Elementary Japanese - 6 Credits
BIOMI 290 - Microbiology - 3 credits
BIOMI 291 - Microbiology Lab - 2 credits
CHEM 357 - Organic Chem for Life Sciences - 3 Credits
CHEM 251 - Intro to Organic Chem (yg said it's required) - 2 credits

Total: 16 credits

Is that an okay first semester? (actually 3rd - I'll be transferring in as a Sophomore - but first at Cornell)

Well how does anyone take a foreign language then...?

The Asian languages are really hard for a non-native. Are you Japanese or some other nationality? My roommate (one of the smartest guys I know) spent like twice as much time on Chinese 109 as he did on honors orgo.

Science-wise that looks okay. If you think you can handle Japanese, then go for it.

Nope...I'm American..just really wanted to learn Japanese. I also wanted to be able to spend my last semester studying abroad in Japan..

Then go for it.

You sure..?

Is there any reason why you are taking microbio instead of physics?

Might as well give it a college try.

Depending on your work ethic, you might even be able to squeeze in a light-reading social science class, like a DSCOC or COMM.

Isn't physics with orgo a tough combo?

I'm a biology major with an emphasis in Microbiology. All of the Microbiology courses require the Micro 290 and 291 class first..which means I'm limited in doing my required classes until I take it. I don't need physics for anything except pre-med requirements...so I am taking Physics Junior year.

Which physics do you guys recommend to take?

Sounds good.

You can take 251 any semester you want. Just wanted to let you know in case you wanted to take something else that's only offered in the Fall.

I recommend getting microbio out of the way since you need it to complete your concentration. The lecture course isn't too bad...short quiz every other week, a midterm and final plus opportunities for extra credit. The lab was a lot of work for 2 credits but it's not hard to do well.

Ok, thanks dewdrop.

Yg, in the book it says it's a required corequisite to take the Orgo 251. Are you sure?
