Hi everyone! I recently committed to OSU and am now trying to figure out which side of campus I would like to live on. I know North Campus has been stereotypically known as the quieter/more studious side of the campus, and that doesn’t really bother me whether it’s true or not. As an engineering major, I’ve heard that North Campus is much, much closer to the locations of my classes, and I think that’ll be really nice in the winter. However, the honors dorm on North, Taylor Tower, seems really secluded. It’s in the very top right corner of the entire campus. I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with Taylor/any complaints about it/any advice. Thank you so much!
I’m in Honors Engineering at OSU so I can answer any questions you may have.
Taylor Tower is anything but secluded, it’s actually bordered by a bunch of res halls like Raney and Barrett House and almost all of North Campus…I’ve heard generally good things about it. However it’s pretty far from places like the Union and anywhere on South campus really.
I live on South in an honors dorm Bradley Hall and I personally love it. It’s super tightknit and there are quite a few engineering majors on my floor and we all do homework and party on the weekends together and I’ve made some good friends. South campus is much more social than North campus and for some reason that’s just been a thing. While that doesn’t mean you won’t have a social life on North campus, it will be much more difficult than on South campus. Furthermore, all the bars are closer to south campus as is chipotle and blaze and some other frequently visited locations. Catfish Biff’s is also really good.
South campus is awesome because almost everyone goes out so it’s nice to be able to cool down the week on Thurs/Fri/Sat at some of the watering holes on campus. Also Kcomm and Marketplace on Neil and Mirror Lake are very close by as is the union and Thompson.
You really can’t go wrong, unless you get West campus (morrill/lincoln towers). Don’t get West campus. No one that lives there leaves there because no one wants to walk to high street.
Hi @kdiddy34 thank you for all the great advice! The main thing I am worried about is the distance to the academic buildings. If you’re a freshman, I guess you have not yet experienced a winter on campus but that is one thing that worries me. I’m from Cleveland so I know how winter typically is in Ohio and the last thing I want to do is walk all the way across campus in snow! How far is the walk to most of your classes? Also, does the shared hall bathroom situation bother you? I liked the set up of Taylor with the in-suite bathrooms, but I also don’t want to worry about having to clean it. Thanks again
Columbus does not compare to Cleveland when it comes to snow. THe avg. yearly snowfall in Cleveland is 68.1 inches vs. Columbus which is around 27 inches. It snows an avg. of 45 days/yr in Cleveland vs. 30 in Columbus.
@lvvcsf oh wow I was unaware that there was that large of a difference! Thanks for the insight!
Can you list your stats please? Please!
Sure!
In-state
ACT: 35 in all except 36 in Science
Unweighted GPA: 4.0
Weighted GPA: 4.35
Rank: 10 of 320
Haha @al7753 I’m from Cleveland too…believe me the snow/cold gets to me very easily I’m not a fan. I don’t know much about Taylor Tower’s bathroom situation but Bradley is known to have one of the best on campus. There’s 8 individual bathroom “suites” that are fairly large with a toilet and shower for each wing in Bradley hall. And there’s a girls wing and a guys wing. I’ve never seen less than 3 open bathrooms on a wing…also everything is cleaned daily by someone from housekeeping. Bradley bathrooms >>>
Also I’m not excited about the winter here whatsoever. It was a pain walking the past couple of months when not warm. The engineering buildings are still going to be a decent walk from the north campus dorms. It will only be a moderate amount less than from Bradley. Busses are very helpful though if timed correctly
okay @kdiddy34 thank you for all the great insight
