I posted a few threads regarding the SAT subject tests and now I am not sure which one to do since it was suggested not to take more than 3. I want to go into pre-med and the SAT subjects that I want to do are physics, math 2, biology, and chemistry. I was never a big fan of biology, but as a future pre-med major it is recommended that I do so. Any tips?
Very few schools require 3 subject tests, so I would take Math 2 and either Biology/Chemistry or Physics. If a third is required, I would take Literature/History or a Language instead to show a diverse breadth of knowledge.
Being Pre-Med does not mean you need to focus on all science. You can major in any subject in college to apply to Medical school as long as you complete the Medical school requirements.
Georgetown requires 3 subject tests. There may be others. Otherwise two is fine. If you’re for sure a STEM major then take Math 2 and a science, but depends on what classes you’re finishing now. If you’re taking AP (or even Honors) Physics, Chemistry or Biology, then take the corresponding subject test. But in every case, I’d still prep my butt off, because the AP or Honors classes don’t cover everything.
Recently, what interested me was how many threads would I find on the Literature subject test. I did a search on CC for kids taking the Literature subject test and found very few take the test and actually post here. Most kids post on the sciences and math. And some post on the History test, but not nearly as many as the math and sciences. I have read Literature is one of, if not, the most difficult non-language subject tests with a low median score (600-ish) and a high standard of deviation (100+).
You can major in anything and still be pre-med. The fact that you’re planning to major in pre-med isn’t really relevant to what subject tests you take, and you shouldn’t feel a need to take bio because you’re planning to major in pre-med.
I’d take Math 2 and then choose the one out of physics / bio / chem that you think you would do the best on. And if you think you can get a good score on a humanities subject test (history / lit) or prepare enough to get a good score, then I’d also take one of those to show breadth of knowledge (since all your current options are in STEM).
I’m only a ninth grader, so taking advice from me probably isn’t for the best but I’ve heard the SAT Biology is much easier than the other subject tests. Just giving my two cents.
Are you considering the integrated science program at Northwestern? Or other schools that use SAT2 in lieu of SAT/ACT for admission? Otherwise, I don’t see why you want to take all the science subject tests. You should focus on Math2 and one science subject you do best unless the school has additional requirement. Just look at your class schedule and take the one you have better knowledge (e.g. after an AP course). Even the syllabus and test format of SAT2 is different from AP, it will need less effort to prepare if it is a related subject.
