which schools are stronger for business?

My son is looking at colleges for business. He likes Richmond, Tulane, Maryland, Northeastern. Thoughts? Someone just mentioned Elon. Is that of the same caliber? Thanks!

Business is very broad…what exactly does he think he wants to do?

Has he considered Bentley?

Elon is in the middle of no where. The other schools on yoir list are in cities. If he wants to be in an urban area…Elon is not.

What are his stats? Do you need merit aid etc.?

We are from NY. My son is a senior at Bentley. He has had a fabulous education. Bentley prepares its students early with very broad business classes narrowing down in focus as the student finds his /her passion. He had relevant summer internships in accounting as a sophomore and finance as a junior. He has a full time job offer starting after graduation in finance in Boston. Two of his three suitemates have job offers as well in accounting and finance. Overall every student we have met over the years was engaging and echoed that they were well prepared in the job search and skills. Bentley has a well established and highly rated career services staff. Business is quite a broad area and usually you will need to narrow that down to a more specific major to be successful whether it is accounting, finance, management etc as the student moves through the college years. If he has other interests such as liberal arts , Bentley has developed that now as well as either a major or to complement the other study areas . In my opinion, the College’s focus is to really make the students understand that there is a business aspect to almost everything. That includes music, art etc if that is the student’s interest. The goal is to monetize what you like and earn a living. My niece is younger and at Northeastern. She has already completed a coop Jan-June 2015 at a regional accounting firm outside of Boston. It was a great experience. She speaks highly of her College and experience so far. Bentley is about 20 minutes outside of Boston and many students travel to Harvard Square by shuttle and/or then into Boston on weekends. Bentley is a mid size college in terms of student population. Northeastern is right in Boston itself. It is a large college. There is a huge amount of information on the internet at the college web sites and social network sites. You should also read other web site reviews, take online video tours and read articles on the different colleges to get a general background. Like any college considerations, your son really needs to visit if possible to get a feeling of the size of the schools, the surrounding area and the “vibe” of the students. We visited many colleges and depending on presentation by the administrators, faculty and students, organization of the college schools (many colleges have schools within them such as communications, computer information systems, business) , size, location and student body really came away with definite opinions of the colleges. You need to weigh those considerations with your son’s academic and other achievements as well as your financial considerations in terms of financial aid and merit scholarships if any that are offered. Once your son is admitted to the various colleges to which he applied, then you can make a choice weighing all of the many factors.

I’d pick Bentley over Northeastern if he really wants business. You might want to look at Indiana since you’ve strayed off the eastern seaboard states with Tulane.

I would look at Elon for sure!
look at U of Pittsburgh too!

Thanks to everyone who has responded. I actually have a son at Bentley now and am so happy with our choice. My second son is a less serious kid, so he thinks Bentley might be too serious for him. Scholarships are not an issue but his GPA is. He has a 3.4 and a 33 on the ACTs.

If he is worried about acceptance to Bentley, what about Bryant?

@thumper1 He’s not worried, he just isn’t a serious kid like my other son is. He want’s to reach for the top business program possible however.
