(I wasn’t sure where to post this so I’ve put it here as well as in the College Admissions Forum.)

My son is trying to decide which test scores to submit with his application to Brown. Here are the details:

SAT I - 2160
Critical Reading -740
Math -680
Writing - 740

SAT II Chem - 710
SAT II Bio E - 740
SAT II U.S. History - waiting for score

ACT Composite 34, Writing 7

Our H.S. guidance counselor is suggesting going with the ACT numbers, even with the Writing score of 7. By the way, the 7 is an unexpected surprise and factors in to some of our hesitation with submitting just the ACT scores.

So, the questions boil down to:

would you suggest submitting the SAT I + 2 SAT Subjects or the ACT?

for Brown, could we submit all of the scores? Or is that a bad idea? (This is our first time through the process…)

i went to an info session for brown. however, it was between choosing 2 out of 3 subject tests one might have taken. She said to send all 3. i don’t know if this helps at all but i guess you might as wells end everything

Boy, that’s tough. If it wasn’t for that ACT writing I would advise you to submit the ACT.

The SAT scores are really strong, with the exception of the math – which could hurt him. I would think the 680 math could hurt more than the 7, so my inclination is the ACT.

Can he get a recommendation from an English teacher, who could say good things about his writing skills?

Seeme25: Thanks for the insight on the Subject Tests, that’s helpful.

fireandrain: Thanks for the response. Yes, the ACT writing score does throw a bit of a wrench in the works. Also, here is some additional info: Today I checked out the SAT essay score (I didn’t realize that was out there - I should have). Anyway, the SAT essay score was an 8 (4 + 4) which I think is pretty comparable to the ACT Writing of 7. So, things appear to be consistently “low” in that regard which I did not realize. Overall, as you suggested, this seems to favor the ACT.

As for your suggestion on the English teacher, the good news is my son already did that and fortunately the letter is very, very positive. This is a teacher that he had for 2 years and he’s at a very strong, well-regarded public H.S. so hopefully that will be a plus.
