after 4 years of HS Spanish, what Spanish class do the advisers normally suggest that you take in college?

They recommended Span 2030 for my son when he registered at Honors Weekend. He has had four years of HS Spanish. He did not take a placement test or anything, and I thought I read something about one at some point. Maybe a current student can answer that question for me?

After completing 4 years of spanish in hs, my daughter just completed Spanish III (2030). There is no placement testing.

did she handle Spanish 3 ok. I thought I saw a class listed that was between Spanish 2 and 3. I can’t remember the name of it.

She did very well in the class, but it certainly wasn’t easy. She did take four years in high school. However, she didn’t really feel that her knowledge starting out was on par with most of the other students. I originally thought that it was in her best interest to take a lower level course, but she was confident that she could handle it. She was right lol

thanks gabby
the class that I see that appears to be one level down from Spanish 3 is called Spanish, Intermed Review. Does anyone know anything about this class.

Wait, is spanish 2030 the next class you take if you place out using AP credit from Spanish Language?

greentea: For most people, yes.

My S will be majoring in business in the fall. He has taken 4 years of Spanish and received an A each year, but he is still not comfortable. He would not have continued with a language if it was not required. After completing the foreign language questionnaire, the department came back and placed him in Spanish 2040 (Conversational Spanish). He knew that would be too much for him. He did not take the AP exam or the SAT II. They have now agreed to place him in Spanish 2030, but the Business School only requires Spanish 1120. I spoke with a Tulane senior who indicated she was in the same position 4 years ago and did take 1120. Do you know if he is permitted to do this? If not, would you recommend he proceed with 2030 or just take an introductory class in a new language. As he will be majoring in Business and will have an adjustment period (as will all other first year students), he would rather focus on Econ and Calc than a language. Please advise. Thanks so much.

Everything I have read says that Tulane does not forbid or even particularly monitor if a student takes a foreign language class at a level below what they might expect based on background. The professor might say something if they think you are way ahead of the rest of the class, but other than that I don’t think there is an issue. Well, perhaps the advisor might say something, although I suspect an advisor attached to the business school will not say anything.

Thanks FallenChemist. The academic advisor indicated it is the jurisdiction of the Spanish Department, with regard to placement. Therefore, it looks like it is 2030 or a new language. Thanks for the reply.

Maybe I am being overly idealistic, but I think in the end it is good that they are challenged rather than being allowed to “skate”. I completely understand the temptation and appeal to have a class that is an “easy A” so that one can focus on the more challenging classes, but I have read a couple of stories on here where being forced to take a class that the people dreaded or wanted to avoid actually changed their lives. So who knows, maybe in the end this will be the best thing for him. We can hope anyway.

Thanks Fallen Chemist. You really provide a great service for a lot of people. Have a great Memorial Day weekend.

Thanks. Same to all here.

My daughter is an incoming freshman who has taken 5 years of Spanish including Spanish 5 AP. She purposely did not take the AP exam because, even though she got A’s in Spanish she did not feel she would do well. She was placed in Spanish 2040 which is for the kids who “passed” the AP course. I was told that 2030 is the equivalent of the AP course and 2040 was the next course after AP. When I asked about her taking 2030 instead of 2040 because she does not feel ready for 2040 I was told that you won’t get credit for a lesser course unless the teacher feels you are misplaced and recommends that you move down.

Has anyone had any experience with 2040? What can be done to switch her to 2030 instead?
Thanks

You can appeal it and if you indicate that you feel your daughter is not ready, they may allow her to take Span 2030. Good luck.
