Which studio?

Question to you current MT students…what should be considered in requesting/assessing the best fit as far as which vocal studio to enter? I gather the choice is a combination of who has space and who is requested. Otherwise you are simply assigned? I’m sure each of the studios has specific strengths, right?

Thanx

Hi WMonMTDad,

You were right first of all with the idea that part of it depends on who has the room for however many students, as well as how many incoming students have requested a specific studio. When a prospective student auditions, typically all of the voice faculty is present, so what usually happens is that the teachers hear the audition, and from that, as well as the 2 previously mentioned things, decide which studio best fits their voice and their needs. Of course every studio has their own strengths, but I had never heard of my voice professor before coming to this school (a little nervewracking at first!), but it has been SUCH a blessing learning with him. Not to worry; the teachers here really know what they're doing, and 9 times out of 10, you will be placed in the studio you're meant to be in. Otherwise, later on, if there is a significant issue where you clash with your voice professor, there are occasional opportunities to switch studios.

Hope this helps!

I was told that they start out trying to match up the student with the voice professor who had the strongest possitive comments about the student's auditon. Then they factor in availible spots and requests. I will say that it has worked out well for my S. He LOVES his voice teacher!

I can not say enough good things about S's voice professor. Last year at this time S got a very nasty bug. He was so sick he couldn't keep anything down. Dr. R and S's Choir director at church tagged teamed to get him into the ER for IV's, picked up his meds and got him back home all while keeping me calm 800 miles away. That along with how incredibly improved my S is vocally assures me that OCU is the place S will get what he needs for his future. I am sure Dr. R is a remarkable person, but at OCU I have the feeling the entire department is remarkable!

My D is also in Dr. R's studio, and I have seen a vast improvement in her voice. She sings O Holy Night at church each Christmas Eve, so I have sort of used that as a measuring stick. This year, it was amazing the difference from the past two years. It started out good, but gets better each year! She did not request a voice teacher and so was assigned Dr. R and she loves him. She also speaks highly of the other voice faculty, and her friends in the different studios seem to really like their teachers also. I'm not sure you could actually go wrong with any of them.

My D met Dr R at a summer workshop, and there was nobody else for her after that! Thank goodness she got in! I'm with musicmom1215 - she's made huge strides. On the other hand, it's hard to go wrong with the faculty there. People who aren't majors get adjuncts, but if you are VP or MT, you will be fine!
