Which SUNY is best for nursing?

Right now I've looked at Geneseo, Stony Brook, and Binghamton.

Geneseo's program is much different than the others...you spend three years at Geneseo pursuing either a bio or psych major, then transfer to Johns Hopkins Nursing School. You then spend 13.5 months-2 years at JHU and in the end, have a bio or psych degree from Geneseo and a nursing degree from JHU.
This sounds dandy...until I realized I would probably be paying for those two years of JHU.

So, to reiterate the title, which SUNY is best for nursing, from your experience?

I don’t know if it is the best, but I have had several friends graduate from SUNY IT.

[School of Nursing & Health Systems](Nursing Programs | SUNY Polytechnic Institute)

As an alum with a former nursing major suitemate, I do know that Binghamton had and still has an excellent nursing program. I wouldn’t know which school is BEST for nursing though or really if there such a thing as one “best” program. Probably what you’ll find is that you like some parts from this program and some from another. I’d say you can’t go wrong with any of the schools you are looking at and you should choose the school with the best overall fit. That may or may not also depend on the final price tag. Best of luck! :)

Can you offer additional information from your friend’s experiences regarding the campus, nursing program, social life, clubs, etc. and overall education in nursing at SUNY IT? Were they able to secure employment after graduation and what were their overall stats to get into the nursing program

Binghamton’s Decker School of Nursing is excellent. The administrators are really supportive and work hard for their students. It is very competitive though, especially since it is the smallest school at Binghamton.

I don’t know which SUNY is best, but try to find out if the school you’re looking at accepts you into the program immediately or you apply after two years of study. For instance, I know a girl that just graduated from South Carolina where you did all of prerequisites, a lot of lab and hospital time, but had to apply after sophomore year for her place in the nursing program. If she would have went to Florida, she would have been accepted into the nursing program upon acceptance to the school. She was accepted into the program but had friends that weren’t after two years of study!

SUNY Plattsburgh has a well respected nursing school and if you have the stats to be accepted to Binghamton or Geneseo, you will certainly qualify for some academic scholarships from Plattsburgh. Check out there guaranteed academic scholarship page, [SUNY Plattsburgh Scholarship Calculator](http://banweb.cc.plattsburgh.edu/pls/banprd/scholarship.calculator) .

SUNY Hunter and Buffalo are also supposed to be great for nursing. I know a few people who did theirs at Buffalo and loved it.

SUNY Binghamton has a rural nursing focus and receives 1000+ apps for about 20 spaces. (very small) The average SAT score, we were told was higher than the general applicants. One thing I noticed, was their NCLEX pass rate being low for the caliber of the student accepted into their program, so that was odd. We were told it was a good program, but we passed due to the size of the program and rural health focus.

@fightingirishdad Hunter is a CUNY school. :stuck_out_tongue: But I agree, it is a good school for nursing. Binghamton is good also.

SUSGEEK…SUNY IT…what were your friend’s experiences there with the nursing program the campus and the overall social environment. Also, what were their stats for admissions? Thank you!

Spring: Friend’s daughter is at SUNY IT and is finding it a very supportive environment. Her adviser reaches out to her to make certain she is on track and taking the right courses. Last year when she was sick for a few weeks, the adviser helped her contact her profs and helped her get back on track when she returned. I don’t know her stats but her mom did say that the school made an exception and waived a few requirements for her to be admitted.

Mmomofbassist…(cute screen name)! Thank you! Do you know how she is finding the social life at SUNY IT? It appears the dorms are newer and seem nice; but how are the social interactions, events, club opportunities etc.?

Springisintheair: I, too, love your screen name. I am so ready for Spring! As for clubs, etc. she seems pretty happy. I think you should ask SUNY IT if they have an overnight visit program so that you could check out the school and the social life. The fit for you will probably depend on whether or not you would like living in a small upstate city. If you are a NYC metro girl then SUNY IT might be too small town and quiet for your tastes. My bass playing son is at SUNY Potsdam and they don’t have a mall or chain restaurants… My other son is at SUNY Plattsburgh which is a small city but with access to Montreal and Burlington, VT and Plattsburgh does have a mall… The other son (not bass player) received a full scholarship to SUNY Potsdam but just couldn’t imagine being there for 4 years, but SUNY Plattsburgh seemed just right to him. Definitely visit and see if you can imagine yourself at SUNY IT for 4 years!

My daughter has applied to several direct admit BNS programs please give me your thoughts:
Plattsburgh- accepted
URI accepted with nice scholarship
UMass Dartmouth accepted with some scholarship money,
we are going to see URI tomorrow, seems like a nice school and a good fit but will be 12K more than SUNY Plattsburgh per year. UMass Dartmouth had a low NCLEX pass rate so i won’t have her consider that school.

Plattsburgh has a reputable nursing program; may I inquire as to her stats?

SUNYIT has been great. I am in the NP program, has become competitive. Has a 100% pass rate on NP boards. Uses technology, live classes I can attend from home and they record them. Great faculty, really nice and go the extra mile.Campus growing like crazy, nanotechnology coming there soon. Nice gym, student center and library. Everything I wanted and needed at a great price. People from all over the state in classes, almost all of the seniors last year employed before they graduated. Really happy with my choice.
