As in, what's the standard "high-school textbook" that everyone uses for this subject? How about if you're studying for APs or something?

Thanks ^^.

Studying for APUSH and SAT II US History I used AMSCO. Great book.

Our class textbook for IB History was A People & A Nation, Norton et. al.

There isn’t a “standard” US history textbook used in high schools. The American Pageant seems to be popular (at least among CC kids).

My school uses Out of Many: A History of the American People… it sorta sucks.

We used American Pageant, which is as close as you can get to a standard textbook in High School.

I’ve got American Pageant. I’m currently reading Lies My Teacher Told Me about why it basically sucks as a history book, though I’m only just beginning.

Thanks for the quick replies :).

I’ll see where I can find these books. Cheers, everyone.

Standard HS class uses An American Nation. AP class uses American Pageant.

American Pageant is teh best. epic win!!!1

AP uses the Pageant
Regular and honors use American Passages

For AP: American History, A Survey, 12th ed. by Brinkmann

We used American Pageant for AP at both of the schools I attended.

Same here. I loved how he talks about hero-fication of people, like Hellen Keller. It’s a great book. I can’t wait to use it rabidly next year in APUSH.

We use American Pageant too for AP. I can’t remember what regular history uses.

Ballers use American Pageant.

Lies My Teacher told is a fantastic book, but he does seem to have some inaccuries regarding American Pagent. There were a couple times he wrote the American Pageant did not include x, but it did include it in a different spot. Overall it was a good read though.

The American Pageant is a wonderful book to sit down and read with. The kids who complain about it are the ones who try to skim it for information ten minutes before the test. Alas, Bailey planned it out so those kids would fail…well, not really, but it makes me feel good to say that. I thoroughly enjoy the flowing language of Bailey, Cohen, and Kennedy, but I outline each chapter so I can study bare-bones facts when needed.

Pfft, all you American Pageant using conformists. We roll with Mary Beth Norton. That’s right, we use A People and a Nation. Best US Hist. text book ever.

I must be a conformist because my school district assigned The American Pageant and is thus forcing us to use it. Yeah. (;

The book we used for AP Euro (The Making of the West) was much better than American Pageant. The narrative style is generally annoying and pointless.

I freaking love the Pageant. We have a fan club for it at our school (no joke)
it reads like a novel and has such passages that read:
“The bountiful american soil was ready for the settlers. It seemed all they had to do was tickle the ground with a hoe and it would laugh with a harvest”
seriously…best ever…

I was suppose to be in Dual Enrollment US HIST, however the class got cancled and my school made the first honors US HIST. The honors teacher teaches Ap so they gave us the ap book, The American Pageant. I do not like the book.
